Baseball Battles to the End in a Pair of Contests at No. 14 New Haven

Goldey-Beacom nearly pulled off the upset of 14th-ranked New Haven with a 6-5 loss in the nightcap after a 9-0 defeat in West Haven, CT.

The Lightning in the top of the first inning of game two raced to a 4-0 lead.  Senior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON) scored on an error, Cole Collins (Laurel, DE) lined an RBI double and fellow sophomore Brandon Hanson (Bayonne, NJ) followed with a two-run double.

After getting three runs back in the last of the first, the Chargers plated three more in the fourth for a 6-4 lead.  George Pappas lined an RBI single, Dylon Grzenda lifted a sacrifice fly and Matt Chamberlin drew a bases loaded walk.

GBC then had a golden opportunity in the top of the seventh and final frame with the bases loaded and none out.  Marsden lined an RBI single to make it 6-5, but two of the next three batters were retired on strikeouts to end it.

Freshman Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, PA) struck out five over three innings, permitting three runs and three hits in a no-decision for the Lightning.  Derwood, MD freshman Jake Heskett (0-2) allowed three runs and two hits in recording just one out.

Joe Caico amassed three hits and Tim Kennedy (4-0) struck out 10, permitting four runs and four hits over six innings for New Haven.  Kellen Croce tossed the seventh inning for his second save of the year.

The opener saw the Chargers score five times in the last of the fifth to open an 8-0 lead.  Jack Zagaja highlighted things with a two-run homer and Caico followed with a solo blast to end the scoring.

Junior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ) pitched great over three innings, striking out five and yielding just one hit.  Royersford, PA sophomore Brandon Ferrie (0-1) was charged with eight runs – four earned – and seven hits over 1 2/3 frames for the Lightning (2-12-1).

David Palmer (4-0) pitched great with eight strikeouts over six frames for the Chargers (14-0), yielding just two hits.  Caico and Tom Walraven collected three hits apiece.

Goldey-Beacom is scheduled to return to action Friday for a doubleheader at Wilmington.  Game time in New Castle, DE is noon.
