On a beautiful, sunny day at Doyle Field, Wilmington University handed Goldey-Beacom baseball a pair of heart crushing defeats. The final scores were 8-2, 10-9.
In game one, the Wildcats (15-9) took a 7-0 lead through four innings of play. Rocky Ferrier went 2 for 3 from the plate and scored two runs. Julian Kurych went 2 for 5 from the plate and scored three runs. Mike Annone and Kendall Small each contributed by going 2 for 4 in the batter's box.Â
Sean Deely (4-0) started on the mound, and received the win, for the Wildcats. He pitched five innings, tallied nine strikeouts, allowed five hits and no earned runs.
John Barkley Jr. (0-2), a freshman from Smyrna, Del., got the starting nod for the Lightning.
During game two of the doubleheader, the Lightning pumped out a booming third inning and took the lead, 7-1. Edwin Lee (La Plata, Md.) initially helped the Lightning take the lead by hitting a two-run double to right center field. Raul Perez-Duran (2 for 4), a junior from Trenton, N.J., hit an RBI single, scoring Tevin Thomas (1 for 2) on the next play, to boost Goldey-Beacom's lead. Immediately following the single, Ty Williams (2 for 4), a junior from Newark, Del., hit an RBI double to score three runs and propel the Lightning to a six-run inning.
Perez-Duran pitched the first four innings and allowed two earned runs. Before leaving the mound in the fifth inning, he helped position the Lightning to a 9-4 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Wildcats (15-9, 9-3 CACC) roared back with a five-run inning to take a 10-9 lead. There were a plethora of singles hit by Max Carney, Logan Gilbert, and Kendall Small to decrease the Lightning lead to one. Regan Hidalgo hit a two-run RBI single, to right field, giving Wilmington University the lead.
Starting the seventh inning, the Lightning loaded the bases and surrendered no outs. However, Noah Latshaw (4 saves) struck out the next three batters and sealed the victory for the Wildcats.Â
Carmichaels, PA freshman Jake Kinsell (0-4) was credited with the loss for the Lightning (1-19, 1-9).Â
Trent Hearn (Bethel, Del.), the freshman left fielder, posted a solid game going 2 for 4 from the plate and tallying three runs.
Goldey-Beacom's next opponent will be Caldwell University at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE on Monday at noon.
