Goldey-Beacom hosted the first doubleheader in school history on a brisk, sunny day at Doyle Field and was dealt losses by scores of 5-4 and 4-0 by Queens (NY) on the ceremonious day in Hockessin, DE.
Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, N.J.) smacked a triple in the first at-bat of the game, which extended his hitting streak to eight games. Tevin Thomas (2-for-3), a freshman from Dover, Del., followed up the hot start, with an RBI single down the left field line, bringing home Abdul, and giving the Lighting a 1-0 lead. First baseman, Zach Roseman (2 for 2), from Wilmington, Del., continued the party in the first inning by hitting an RBI single and scoring Keegan Marsden on the play.
Raul Perez-Duran (3 for 3), a junior from Trenton, N.J., hit the first home run at Doyle Field blasting the ball over the left-field fence in the fourth inning, giving the Lightning a 3-1 lead.
After the Knights added two more runs, Thomas scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning helping the Lightning reach a 4-3 lead.
Jake Trejo, a junior from Wauseon, Ohio, started the day, and went five innings while allowing three runs. Perez-Duran (0-1) relieved Trejo in the sixth inning.Â
Thom Parish stepped up for the Knights in the seventh inning, hitting an RBI double to left center. Then, Joe Morris hit an RBI single, helping Queens (NY) win the first game of the doubleheader. Rob Backus received his first win
At the conclusion of the second game, the Knights (5-3) stashed another win.
In the top of the second inning, Queens (NY) took a 1-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Joe Morris. As a result, Karl Klesin sprinted and dove toward home plate for an unearned run.
The Knights continued to ruin the Lightning's home opener, adding three more runs. In the sixth inning, Karl Klesin had an RBI double down the left field line that allowed Joel Mendez to score from first base. Bri Watters continued the Knights' momentum into seventh inning when he contributed a two-run single to center field.
Brandon Ferrie, a freshman from Royersford, Pa., got the starting nod for Goldey-Beacom. He pitched all seven innings while allowing four hits and three earned runs. After today, he holds an 0-2 record.
Thomas (1-for-3), the freshman left fielder, extended his hitting streak to nine games when he singled to third base in the first inning.
For the Knights, Nick Morena (2-0) had an impressive outing pitching all seven innings, while allowing three hits and no runs.
Goldey-Beacom (0-10) will play host to Mercyhurst on Friday, March 10. Starting at noon, the doubleheader will take place at Doyle Field in Hockessin, Del.
