THAT’S ONE: Baseball Notches First Victory in Program History

Goldey-Beacom produced its season high in runs and recorded its first victory in program history with a 14-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph at Chestnut Hill in the second game of a doubleheader in Norristown, PA.

The Lightning opened the day with a tough 7-6 loss.

Goldey-Beacom (1-13, 1-3 CACC) in the victory broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Ty Williams (Newark, DE) led off by reaching on an error and fellow junior Edwin Lee (La Plata, MD) brought him home with a one-out triple for a 3-2 lead.  Sophomore Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ) doubled the margin with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Lee.

Chestnut Hill (5-7-1, 1-1) made it 4-3 in the last of the frame on Eric Gilham's groundout, but Goldey-Beacom got that run back in the sixth.  Junior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON) led off by being hit by a pitch, took second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Zach Roseman (Wilmington, DE) and reached third on a groundout from junior Jake Trejo (Wauseon, OH).  Marsden then crossed home when freshman Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) lined a single to center field.

The Lightning then left no doubt with a nine-run explosion in the seventh inning for the final.  Roseman had a two-run single, Williams recorded an RBI triple, freshman Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE) notched a run-scoring groundout and Marsden added an RBI single.

Lee rapped three hits with Roseman and Abdul getting two each for the Lightning.  Abdul (1-2), who got the first run and first double in team history, now can say he got the first win by striking out five over five innings and yielding three unearned runs.  Junior Blake Salesky (Aurora, IL) recorded the first save in club annals, striking out three and yielding just one hit over two innings.

Matthew Kress (1-1) was tagged for five runs – three earned – and five hits over 5 2/3 frames with four strikeouts for the Griffins.

GBC in game one rallied for a 2-2 tie in the top of the second when freshman Hill launched a two-run homer for his first collegiate long ball.  The visitors took their first lead, 4-2, in the third courtesy of no hits as junior Jason Rowe (West Hills, CA) scored on a fielder's choice and Abdul crossed home on an error.

Abdul then had an RBI single in the fourth for a 5-2 Lightning lead, but the Griffins scored four times in the fifth for a 6-5 cushion.  Joseph Monaghan tied it on an RBI single up the middle and Gilham put Chestnut Hill ahead with a run-scoring single.

GBC rallied in the ninth for a 6-6 tie, loading the bases with none out before Roseman lined an RBI single to plate freshman Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE).  But the Griffins won it in the ninth when Eric Small walked, took second on Jon Baturgil's sacrifice bunt and scored on Brandon DiBona's single to right-center field.

Roseman and Hill had two hits apiece for the Lightning.  Freshman Brandon Ferrie (Royersford, PA) struck out six over 7 2/3 innings in a no-decision, but Salesky (0-1) gave up a run over two-thirds of an inning.

Matthew Owens went 4-for-4 and Dino Cattai (1-0) got the win despite giving up the tying run in the ninth for Chestnut Hill.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Post for a noon doubleheader in Hockessin, DE.
