Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Falls Twice at Newberry

Goldey-Beacom once again battled against Newberry and was dealt a pair of losses, 19-1 and 11-5, in Newberry, SC.

Game one saw Newberry plate seven runs in the second inning to open a 10-0 lead.  Robert Kosch opened the scoring in the frame with a two-run single and Ben Herring delivered the key blow with a three-run homer.

Goldey-Beacom got its lone run in the seventh when senior CJ Wood (Newark, DE) lifted a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Calvin Clark (Millville, NJ).

Old Bridge, NJ sophomore Brandon Abdul (0-2) permitted 10 runs and 11 hits over 1 1/3 innings for the Lightning, who managed just six hits.

Trejon Smith went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Herring closed with five RBI for the Wolves.  Evan Estridge (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings, striking out two with no walks and allowing just three hits.

Newberry in game two busted open things with a five-run fourth inning for a 10-4 lead.  After Herring had an RBI single and Daymon Totherow drew a bases-loaded walk, Smith cleared the bases with a three-run double.

Junior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON) homered twice for the Lightning, each a solo shot that gives him four long balls on the year.  He also closed with three of his squad's eight hits.

Freshman Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE) recorded a hit in each contest and is the only player for the Lightning to get a hit in all six games this season.  Wauseon, OH junior Jake Trejo (0-2) allowed 10 runs – eight earned – and 10 hits over four innings with five strikeouts for GBC (0-6).

Herring and Danton Hyman had three hits apiece and Smith amassed five RBI for Newberry (7-8).  Hunter Hill allowed four runs and five hits over four innings with three strikeouts.

The teams will conclude their four-game series Sunday, beginning at noon.
