WILMINGTON, Del. - After earning a 59-52 victory over Merrimack College on Wednesday night, the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team will face Caldwell College in the semifinals of the 2014 Eastern College Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship on Saturday, Mar. 15.
The game, which is slated for a 12 p.m. tip-off, will be held at Alumni Hall on the campus of Fairfield University. Tickets for Saturday's game will be available for six dollars for adults and three dollars for children and senior citizens.
Now 14-14 on the season, the Lightning have won four of their last five games after the seven-point victory against the Warriors on Wednesday night. The Lightning led by as many as 19 points in the second half before holding off the Warriors for the win. Junior forward
Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.) led the Lightning to the victory by posting her sixth "double double" of the season with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, junior guard
Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill East H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.) tallied a game-high 18 points after making 7 of 15 shots from the floor, including a 3-for-4 effort from three-point range. She also added five rebounds with four steals.
Making her first start of the season, junior guard
Shantia Creech (Hunt H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 14 points with eight rebounds while junior forward
Dakia Manning (Freire Charter H.S./East Lansdowne, Pa.) added a season-high nine rebounds while tallying eight points.
The eighth-leading scorer in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Chukwueze has scored in double figures in 20 of her last 21 games and leads the Lightning by averaging 15.3 points per game. She also has a team-high 48 steals in 28 games this season.
Senior forward
Briana Richmond-Peters (Brimm Medical Arts H.S./Camden, N.J.) is tied for third in the CACC by averaging 9.9 rebounds per game and has tallied at least 10 rebounds in five consecutive games. With 276 rebounds in 28 games this season, she ranks third on the Lightning's all-time single-season list.
Currently 18-11 on the season, the top-seeded Cougars have been idle since dropping a 52-41 decision to Bloomfield in the CACC Championship Game on Mar. 1, which snapped a seven-game win streak. Caldwell earned a bye in the ECAC quarterfinals on Wednesday by receiving the top seed.
Senior center
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn English H.S./Lynn, Mass.) scored 17 points in the loss last Saturday, making 7 of 14 field goal attempts in addition to three of four free throws. The CACC Player of the Year, she also contributed nine rebounds against the Deacons, including five offensive rebounds.
Meanwhile, sophomore guard
Nicole Angelo (Camden Catholic H.S./Mount Laurel, N.J.) added 16 points for the Cougars on Saturday after shooting 6-for-8 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Anderson, who has started all 29 games for the Cougars this season, leads the team in scoring and rebounding by averaging 18.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She has posted 14 "double double" games this year and scored a season-high 30 points with 14 rebounds in a win over Georgian Court on Dec. 7.
Freshman forward
Alyssa James (St. Mary's H.S./Rosedale, N.Y.) earned an honorable mention selection on the All-CACC team and leads the Cougars with 78 blocked shots while grabbing 9.9 rebounds per contest. She is also the team's fourth-leading scorer with a 7.9 average.
Junior forward
Emily Caswell (Prout School/Wakefield, R.I.) ranks second on the team by averaging 13.3 points per game while Angelo is scoring 11.1 points per outing.
The Lightning and the Cougars will be meeting for the second time this season after Caldwell earned a 62-59 victory over Goldey-Beacom on Feb. 16 at the George R. Newman Center. Caswell scored a game-high 19 points for the Cougars while Grover tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Lightning.
Caldwell leads the all-time series by a 13-5 margin and has won four of the last five meetings.
