Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 to In-Town Rival Wilmington University

Lightning Outshot Wildcats 22-14 in Loss

Box Score

Wilmington, Del.- The Wilmington University Wildcats (5-11, 5-6 CACC) used an early goal to take down the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning, 1-0, in Central Atlantic Conference women's soccer action at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field on Monday afternoon.

In the 26th minute, Wildcat forward Loran Wyrough played a through ball up the middle of the field and senior forward Chelsea Grace accepted the pass and was able to sneak one by the Lightning goalkeeper, Cindell Aguirre (Coronado H.S./El Paso, Texas), for what eventually became the game-winning goal.

The Lightning, who outshot the Wildcats by a 22-14 margin, had plenty of chances for the equalizer throughout the game. Senior net minder, Julia Brown, had plenty of answers for the Lightning, including a save on a penalty kick in the 35th minute.

Brown finished the day with 10 saves, and the Wildcats tacked on a team save to go along with everything as a scrum ensued within the six yard line in the 58th minute. The ball found the foot of senior forward Alexandra Smith (Pennsville Memorial H.S./Pennsville, N.J.), Smith's shot beat the goalkeeper however a Wildcat defender booted the ball away just inches from crossing the goal line to preserve the one goal lead.

Aguirre posted seven saves in the loss and has a staggering 0.48 goals against average in five games this season.

The Lightning will look to rebound from the loss as they travel to Holy Family University for CACC battle on Wednesday afternoon, start time is set for 3:30 PM.
