WILMINGTON, Del. – Led by a 21-point, 11-rebound effort from junior guard
Brianne Traub, the University of the Sciences (12-5, 7-3) used a strong start to end a two-game losing streak with a 65-60 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (7-10, 4-6) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Thursday evening.
The CACC's fourth-leading scorer, Traub earned her fourth "double double" of the season as the Devils defeated the Lightning for the second time this season. Traub also led the Devils to a close 57-55 victory over Goldey-Beacom on Nov. 12 in the CACC opener.
The Devils overcame an early 8-6 deficit by scoring 17 of the next 21 points to take a commanding 23-12 lead with 7:25 remaining in the opening stanza.
From there, the Devils continued to build their lead and took a 15-point advantage into the intermission after a Traub lay-up with five seconds left.
Trailing by a 49-33 margin just over seven minutes into the second half, the Lightning began to mount a comeback by scoring 16 of the next 24 points, including seven points from junior guard
Lillian Chukwueze, to trim the deficit to 57-49 with 4:30 left in regulation.
But, the Devils responded by scoring 8 of the next 12 points to increase their lead to 65-53 with 2:57 left.
The Lightning narrowed the gap to 65-60 by scoring the final seven points of the game, but were unable to get any closer.
While Traub led the Devils to the victory, freshman guard
Camille McPherson added 18 points with eight rebounds. She made 6 of 10 shots from the floor, including a 3-for-6 effort from three-point range, while connecting on all three free throws.
Chukwueze led the Lightning in the loss by scoring a game-high 23 points, marking her fourth 20-point effort of the season. She made 10 of 16 field goal attempts and also added four rebounds and three steals.
The Lightning will travel to Felician College on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a 1 p.m. CACC game against the Golden Falcons.
