NEWARK, Del. – After being held scoreless for the first three matches this season, Goldey-Beacom College junior
Alexandra Smith (Pennsville Memorial H.S./Pennsville, N.J.) needed just over four minutes against Wilmington University to make sure the streak did not reach a fourth match.
However, the Wildcats (3-4-0, 3-1-0) answered by scoring two goals in the first half to earn a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Lightning (0-4-0, 0-4-0) at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Smith, who had not scored in her last 15 matches dating back to the 2011 season, gave the Lightning its first lead of the season in the fifth minute when corralled a loose ball at midfield and scored on a breakway off the right goal post.
But, the Wildcats answered just over eight minutes later when senior midfielder
Jordanne Hoesli-Atkins (Middlesex, England) sent a pass to freshman
Kim Richer (Seneca H.S./Shamong, N.J.), who scored on a long 25-yard shot for her second goal of the season.
With 11:41 remaining in the first half, junior forward
Victoria Vasapolli (Burlington City H.S./Burlington, N.J.) took a crossing pass from Richer and scored her team-leading third goal into the upper right corner of the goal.
From there, the Wildcats held Goldey-Beacom to just three shots over the final 56 minutes en route to their third win in the last four matches.
Junior goalkeeper
Julia Brown (Shawnee H.S./Medford, N.J.) tallied three saves after allowing the match's opening goal to lead the Wildcat defense, which held the Lightning to just six shots.
Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper
Cindell Aguirre (Coronado H.S./El Paso, Texas) made 10 saves in a losing effort, including six in the first half.
The Lightning, who have played three of their first four matches on the road, will begin a four-match homestand on Saturday, Sept. 28 when they host Nyack College in a CACC contest at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, the Wildcats will remain home to face Caldwell on Saturday at 12 p.m.
