Opening Tip-Off
Looking to extend their win streak to six straight games, the Lightning will open a three-game road trip on Wednesday night by traveling to Georgian Court University for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division match-up against the Lions. Opening tip-off between the Lightning and the Lions is slated for 6 p.m. from the GCU Wellness Center. In addition, live video of Wednesday's game will be available via the Lions' official athletics website, www.gculions.com.
Updating the Lightning
Currently 15-8 overall and 12-2 in the CACC, the Lightning are in second place in the CACC South Division standings after winning their fifth straight game, a 61-47 victory over Felician on Saturday afternoon at the Joseph West Jones College Center. The Lightning, who have won 12 of their last 15 games, also secured a berth in the CACC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season after their win on Saturday. Sophomore guard Taylor Leonard scored a career-high 11 points to lead the Lightning on Saturday while senior guard Devonne Richardson contributed 10 points with eight rebounds and five assists. Richardson, who earned her third CACC Player of the Week award of the season last week, is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 12.2 average while grabbing a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game.
Scouting Georgian Court
Currently 7-14 overall and 6-9 in the CACC, the Lions have dropped 6 of their last 10 games after suffering a 75-66 setback against Dominican in a CACC crossover contest on Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center. The Lions, who will be playing their third straight home game on Wednesday night, were led by senior guard Shauneia McPhearson, who scored a game-high 25 points by making 9 of 18 field goal attempts along with five of six free throws. Meanwhile, junior guard Brittany Baker added her third “double double” of the season with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. McPhearson is the Lions' leading scorer with a 16.8 average while sophomore forward Tahira Matthews is contributing 11.0 points per game while grabbing 7.7 rebounds per outing. The Lions are currently in fifth place in the South Division standings and trail Philadelphia University by a 1.5-game margin. Coach Valerie Curtis is in her sixth season as the Lions' leader; she has led Georgian Court to a 41-112 record.
Streaks, Storylines and Sidebars
• A win over the Lions on Wednesday night would give Goldey-Beacom at least 16 wins for the fifth time in the program's Division II history, including a fourth consecutive season.
• In addition, a win on Wednesday would give the Lightning a six-game win streak, which would match the school record. The Lightning set the record last year with six straight wins from Jan. 24 to Feb. 9.
• After a five-game losing skid in November, the Lightning have won 12 of their last 15 games and will be trying to win their third straight road game when they visit Georgian Court on Wednesday night.
• The Lightning have clinched their fourth consecutive appearance in the CACC Tournament after their 61-47 victory over Felician on Feb. 2. A win by the Lightning along with a loss by the University of the Sciences and Philadelphia University would clinch a home game for the Lightning in the quarterfinals.
• The Lightning have now won 10 or more CACC games for the fourth straight season. Since becoming an NCAA Division II program in 2003-04, the Lightning have won 10 or more conference games five times.
• The Lightning enter this week's games ranked second in the CACC and fifth in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage defense. In CACC games, the Lightning have limited opponents to a .284 field goal percentage, which leads the CACC.
• The Lightning have held the rebounding advantage in 9 of their last 11 games. In the win over Felician on Saturday afternoon, the Golden Falcons outrebounded Goldey-Beacom by a 53-47 margin, including 23 offensive rebounds.
• The Lightning are 12-3 this season when leading at the intermission.
• The Lightning enter Wednesday's game leading the CACC in fewest turnovers per game with a 16.4 average. In addition, they lead the CACC by averaging 14.9 made free throws per game.
• The Lightning have posted 18 blocked shots in their last three games, including a season-high 10 blocks against Post on Jan. 26. The Lightning are ranked second in the CACC by averaging 4.5 blocked shots per game.
• After scoring 73 points in the win over the University of the Sciences on Jan. 29, the Lightning have won 15 consecutive games when scoring 70 or more points, including a perfect 6-0 record this year. The Lightning's last loss when scoring 70 or more points came against the University of the District of Columbia in an 86-74 setback on Nov. 19, 2011.
• Senior guard Devonne Richardson is expected to play in the 110th game of her college career on Wednesday, which would tie the school record set by Janae Weldon (2007-11) and Toni Jones (2004-08).
• Senior forward Irene Hudson has scored in double figures in eight of her last nine games. During that stretch, she is averaging 12.4 points per contest while making 50.6 per cent of her field goal attempts.
• Over the last four games, senior guard Jacinda Jones has made 17 of 34 (.500) attempts from three-point range. She connected on four of seven attempts against the University of the Sciences last Tuesday evening.
• After scoring in double figures just once in her first 11 games this season, Jones has posted six double-digit scoring efforts in her last nine games, averaging a team-high 13.2 points per game during that time.
• Richardson also enters Wednesday's game needing just seven assists to break her own single-season school record that she set last year. She ranks second in the CACC with 112 assists this year, including 50 during the month of January.
A Look Back at This Year's Earlier Meeting
Senior guard Devonne Richardson scored a game-high 18 points and added 14 rebounds as the Lightning earned their 14th straight win over Georgian Court with a 66-60 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Lions at the Joseph West Jones College Center on Dec. 4. Richardson, who posted her third “double double” of the season, struggled from the field by making just 3 of 10 attempts, but was 12-for-22 from the free throw line. She also had a game-high four steals and three assists. Meanwhile, senior forward Irene Hudson contributed 11 points for the Lightning, who were 22-for-34 from the foul line. Senior forward Christina White led Georgian Court by scoring 15 points with nine rebounds while junior guard Ebony Sellers had 10 points with six rebounds and four assists.
Series Business: Georgian Court
Wednesday's game between the Lightning and the Lions will mark the 24th meeting between the two teams since the start of the 2002-03 season. After defeating the Lions by a 66-60 margin on Dec. 4, the Lightning have won 14 straight games against Georgian Court and lead the all-time series by an 18-5 margin. The Lions' last win in the series came on Jan. 10, 2006 in a 79-67 victory at the GCU Wellness Center. The Lightning have never lost to the Lions in Wilmington.
Richardson Records First “Triple Double” in Lightning's Win Over Post
Senior guard Devonne Richardson became the first player in Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball history to record a “triple double” when she accomplished the feat against Post University on Jan. 26. The Baltimore, Md. native scored a game-high 14 points with 11 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists while leading the Lightning to a 68-45 victory over the Eagles at the Jones Center. It marked the sixth “triple double” game in NCAA Division II and is believed to be the first by a player in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference since Feb. 15, 2005 when Leah Shumoski of the University of the Sciences scored 13 points with 11 rebounds and 10 assists against the Lightning in an 80-70 victory.
Too Close for Comfort
Of the Lightning's 15 victories this season, seven of them have been decided by seven points or less. In addition, the Lightning have won two of their games this year with a field goal in the closing seconds of regulation. On Nov. 12, senior guard Jacinda Jones gave Goldey-Beacom a 67-66 victory at Kutztown with a field goal with two seconds remaining. Senior guard Devonne Richardson scored on a lay-up with 5.8 seconds left in regulation on Dec. 8 to break a 53-53 tie against Caldwell.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will continue their three-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 9 when they travel to Nyack College for a CACC contest against the Warriors. Opening tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. and will be the first game of a CACC doubleheader. The Lightning lead the all-time series by a 9-8 margin and have won the last two meetings in the series.
