WILMINGTON, Del. - Led by a game-high 20 points from senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.), Goldey-Beacom College (19-8, 16-2) used a strong first half performance to extend its school-record win streak to nine straight games with a 68-57 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Philadelphia University (12-12, 8-9) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Tuesday evening.
Hudson, who scored 20 or more points for the 11th time in her college career, tallied 13 of her 20 points in the first half as the Lightning shot a blistering 57.1 per cent in the opening stanza en route to tying a school record with their 19th win of the season.
Led by six points from Hudson and senior guard
Jacinda Jones (Concord H.S./Claymont, Del.), the Lightning exploded for an 18-4 lead in the opening six minutes of the first half, making seven of their first eight shots from the floor.
The Lightning maintained their double-digit lead through the remainder of the first half en route to a 22-point cushion at the intermission.
After the Lightning extended their lead to 53-27 in the opening 2:20 of the second half, the Rams put together an 18-8 run, including seven points from sophomore guard
Najah Jacobs (Central H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.), to narrow the deficit to 61-45 with 6:53 remaining.
Hudson scored four consecutive points for the Lightning before the Rams answered by going on a 12-0 spurt to trim the margin to 65-57 on a jumper by senior forward
Kristen Blye (Downingtown East H.S./Chester Springs, Pa.).
But, the Lightning secured the victory by making three of five free throws in the final 44 seconds.
While Hudson led the Lightning to their seventh win over the Rams in the last eight meetings, senior guard
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) contributed her eighth "double double" of the season with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds while sophomore forward
Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.) added 12 points with three blocked shots.
Blye led the Rams in a losing effort with her fourth "double double" of the season, scoring 12 points with a game-high 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, Schacker tallied 11 points with four rebounds, extending her streak of consecutive double-figure scoring games to 11 straight outings.
The Lightning, who have won 16 of their last 19 games, will end the regular season on Saturday afternoon by welcoming sixth-ranked and defending CACC champion Holy Family to the Joseph West Jones College Center at 1 p.m. A win by the Lightning would clinch a share of the CACC South Division title and give Goldey-Beacom its first 20-win season in school history.
