ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - Senior guard
Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman H.S./Levittown, Pa.) scored the game-winning basket on a lay-up as time expired as Goldey-Beacom College (18-8, 15-2) rallied to extend its school-record win streak to eight straight games with a 61-60 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Dominican College (16-9, 13-5) at the Chargers' Hennessy Center on Saturday afternoon.
In addition, the Lightning also set a pair of school records in the victory. The win marked their eighth consecutive CACC triumph, surpassing the previous mark of seven straight wins that was set earlier this season. It also marked the Lightning's 15th CACC victory this season, breaking the school record for conference wins in a season that was set last year when Goldey-Beacom posted a 14-5 CACC record.
After the Lightning took a timeout with four seconds remaining, Rosario took a pass from senior forward
Akilah Sewell (Baltimore City College H.S./Baltimore, Md.) and scored on a lay-up from the left block as time expired to give the Lightning the one-point win.
The basket capped a late comeback by the Lightning, who trailed by as many as six points with 10:46 remaining in the second half.
Leading by a 24-22 margin to open the second half, the Lightning scored 8 of the first 10 points to build a 32-24 advantage with 16:59 left on a Sewell lay-up. But, an 11-2 spurt by the Chargers over the next three minutes gave Dominican a 35-34 edge with 13:26 remaining on a three-point field goal by senior guard
Shannon Lavelle (Archbishop Molloy H.S./Floral Park, N.Y.).
After the Lightning evened the score at 35-35, the teams traded six-point runs before a pair of free throws from freshman guard
Deja Gabbidon (Teaneck H.S./Teaneck, N.J.) regained a two-point advantage for the Chargers.
The Lightning answered by going on an 8-2 spurt to take a 49-45 lead on a Rosario jumper with 6:34 remaining. After trimming the deficit to 52-50 with 4:20 left, the Chargers scored seven consecutive points for a 57-52 cushion on a jumper by senior guard
Lindsay Lopez (Immaculate Conception H.S./Elmwood Park, N.J.) with 2:45 remaining.
But, the Lightning responded with a quick five-point spurt over a 42-second span to tie the game at 57-57 with 1:35 remaining on a free throw by senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.).
The Chargers scored three of the next five points to take a slim 60-59 advantage with nine seconds left, setting up the game-winning heroics for the Lightning.
After Dominican took an early 10-8 lead in the opening 11 minutes of the first half, the Lightning used a 14-7 run to build a 21-17 advantage on a jumper from senior guard
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) with 2:12 remaining in the stanza.
Despite allowing five of the last seven points in the period, the Lightning held a two-point edge at the intermission.
In addition to scoring 11 points, Rosario also set a school record by playing in the 110th game of her college career, surpassing the mark set by
Toni Jones (2004-08) and
Janae Weldon (2007-11).
Rosario was one of three players to score in double figures for the Lighting. Hudson scored a game-high 21 points after making 6 of 11 shots from the floor and 9 of 12 free throw attempts. Meanwhile, Richardson came off the bench to contribute 10 points with two steals.
Junior forward
KC Jentzen (Nanuet H.S./Pearl River, N.Y.) led the Chargers in a losing effort with a "double double" after scoring 12 points with a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Lightning, who have won 15 of their last 18 games, will return to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Tuesday night to face Philadelphia University in a CACC South Division contest at 6 p.m.
