NYACK, N.Y. - Senior forward
Akilah Sewell (Baltimore City College H.S./Baltimore, Md.) scored a season-high 18 points and added a game-high 15 rebounds as Goldey-Beacom College (17-8, 14-2) set a school record by earning its seventh win in a row, a 72-43 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Nyack College (1-21, 1-14) at the Warriors' Bowman Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
Led by Sewell, the Lightning posted their 14th win in the last 17 games while defeating the Warriors for the third straight time.
After the Warriors jumped out to an early 5-4 lead in the opening three minutes of the first half, the Lightning answered by scoring 11 of the next 14 points to take a 15-8 advantage with 13:26 remaining on a lay-up by senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.).
A three-point field goal by junior guard
Ashley Tallman (Mohonasen H.S./Rotterdam, N.Y.) trimmed the Warriors' deficit to 15-11 before the Lightning went on a 12-0 run to extend the margin to 27-11 with 8:18 left in the first half.
Sophomore guard
Brianna Taylor (Oakland Mills H.S./Columbia, Md.) converted a three-point field goal to end a nearly five-minute drought for the Warriors before Goldey-Beacom ended the first half by going on a 7-2 spurt, upping the Lightning's lead to 35-16.
The Lightning opened the second half by scoring six of the first eight points to extend the margin to 41-18 with 16:53 remaining before a pair of lay-ups from senior guard
Khamari Tellis (Montclair H.S./Chicago, Ill.) narrowed the margin to 41-22 with 15:59 left.
But, the Warriors were unable to get any closer as the Lightning held Nyack to just three field goals over the final 15 minutes en route to the victory.
Sewell, who posted the seventh “double double” of her career, made 7 of 11 shots from the floor and was perfect in four free throw attempts. She also added two blocks and a steal.
Hudson also posted a "double double" in the victory for the Lightning, scoring 15 points with 12 rebounds. In addition, senior guard
Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman H.S./Levittown, N.Y.) came off the bench to contribute 15 points while tying the school record by playing in her 110th career game.
Tellis led Nyack in a losing effort with 10 points as the Warriors lost their second straight game.
The Lightning, who secured a home game for the CACC quarterfinals with the victory on Wednesday night, will play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 16 when they travel to Dominican College for a 1 p.m. game against the Chargers, who currently lead the CACC's North Division.
