Opening Tip-Off
Hoping to secure a home game for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinals, the Lightning will continue their three-game road trip on Wednesday evening by traveling to Nyack College for a CACC contest against the Warriors. Opening tip-off at Bowman Gymnasium is slated for 5 p.m. in the first game of a CACC doubleheader. In addition, live video and live stats for Saturday's game will be available via the Warriors' official athletics website, athletics.nyack.edu.
Updating the Lightning
After earning a 54-45 victory over Georgian Court last Wednesday night in a CACC South Division contest, the Lightning will bring a six-game win streak and a 16-8 overall record into Wednesday's game at Nyack. In addition, the Lightning have an impressive 13-2 CACC record and are in second place in the South Division standings. Senior forward Irene Hudson led the Lightning to the victory at Georgian Court by scoring 14 points with nine rebounds while senior forward Akilah Sewell matched a career high with six blocked shots while connecting on all four of her free throw attempts. In addition, junior forward Briana Richmond-Peters set a season high by scoring 11 points off the bench as the Lightning beat the Lions for the 15th time in a row. Senior guard Devonne Richardson is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 12.2 average while grabbing a team-high 9.3 rebounds per outing, which ranks fourth in the CACC.
Scouting Nyack
The Warriors will enter Wednesday's game with a 1-20 overall record and a 1-13 mark in the CACC after dropping a 65-48 verdict against Caldwell last Wednesday night in a CACC North Division match-up. Senior forward Courtney Peay and senior guard Khamari Tellis each scored 12 points in a losing effort for the Warriors while junior guard Ashley Tallman added nine points off the bench. Nyack will be looking to get its second win in the last three games after snapping a lengthy losing streak with a 78-72 victory over Wilmington on Feb. 2. Tellis, who earned honorable mention recognition for CACC weekly awards last Monday, is the Warriors' leading scorer with a 13.4 average while grabbing a team-high 7.8 rebounds per outing. Meanwhile, Tallman is contributing 7.4 points per contest. Coach David Julien is in his third season as the Warriors' leader. A 1998 graduate of Nyack, he ranks third on the Warriors' men's basketball career scoring list with 1,844 points.
Streaks, Storylines and Sidebars
• A win over the Warriors on Wednesday would give Goldey-Beacom at least 17 wins for the fifth time in the program's Division II history, including a fourth consecutive season. Over the last four years, the Lightning have a 70-40 (.636) record.
• In addition, a win on Wednesday would give the Lightning a seven-game win streak, which would break the school record for consecutive victories. The Lightning set the record last year with six straight wins from Jan. 24 to Feb. 9.
• The Lightning would also tie the school record for consecutive conference wins with a victory at Nyack. The Lightning won seven straight CACC games from Nov. 30 to Jan. 8 earlier this season.
• A victory over the Warriors on Wednesday night would give the Lightning 14 conference wins this year, which would tie the school record. The Lightning posted a 14-5 record in CACC play last year.
• After a five-game losing skid in November, the Lightning have won 13 of their last 16 games and will be trying to win their fourth straight road game when they visit Nyack on Wednesday evening.
• The Lightning have clinched their fourth consecutive appearance in the CACC Tournament after their 61-47 victory over Felician on Feb. 2. A win by the Lightning on Wednesday evening would clinch a home game for the Lightning in the quarterfinals.
• The Lightning have now won 10 or more CACC games for the fourth straight season. Since becoming an NCAA Division II program in 2003-04, the Lightning have won 10 or more conference games five times.
• The Lightning are ranked second in the CACC and fourth in NCAA Division II in opponent field goal percentage defense (.324). In CACC games, the Lightning have limited opponents to a .282 field goal percentage, which leads the CACC.
• Goldey-Beacom has held its opponent to under 50 points in seven of its last nine games. The Lightning are 11-2 over the last two seasons when holding an opponent under 50 points, including a 7-1 mark this year.
• The Lightning have held the rebounding advantage in 12 of their last 14 games. In the win over Georgian Court last Wednesday night, the Lightning outrebounded the Lions by a 45-40 margin and had 14 offensive rebounds.
• The Lightning are 13-3 this season when leading at the intermission.
• The Lightning enter Wednesday's game leading the CACC in fewest turnovers per game with a 16.4 average. In addition, they lead the CACC by averaging 15.0 made free throws per game.
• The Lightning have posted 27 blocked shots in their last four games, including a season-high 10 blocks against Post on Jan. 26. The Lightning are ranked second in the CACC by averaging 4.7 blocked shots per game.
• After scoring 73 points in the win over the University of the Sciences on Jan. 29, the Lightning have won 15 consecutive games when scoring 70 or more points, including a perfect 6-0 record this year. The Lightning's last loss when scoring 70 or more points came against the University of the District of Columbia in an 86-74 setback on Nov. 19, 2011.
• Senior guards Ashley Rosario and Devonne Richardson will tie the school record for games played when they make their next appearance, a mark set by Janae Weldon (2007-11) and Toni Jones (2004-08). Weldon and Jones each played in 110 games during their careers.
• Senior forward Irene Hudson has scored in double figures in 9 of her last 10 games. During that stretch, she is averaging 12.6 points per contest while making 50.5 per cent of her field goal attempts.
• After scoring in double figures just once in her first 11 games this season, senior guard Jacinda Jones has posted 6 double-digit scoring efforts in her last 10 games, averaging 12.4 points per game during that time. In addition, she has converted 51.6 per cent of her three-point field goal attempts during the last 10 games.
• Richardson also enters Wednesday's game needing just seven assists to break her own single-season school record that she set last year. She ranks second in the CACC with 112 assists this year, including 50 during the month of January.
A Look Back at Last Year's Meeting
Senior forward Irene Hudson led three Goldey-Beacom players in double figures with a game-high 14 points and also contributed eight rebounds as the Lightning limited Nyack to just 19 second-half points en route to a 71-44 victory in last year's meeting at the Jones Center. The Lightning, who posted their fifth straight victory, held a 52-43 rebounding advantage that included 26 offensive rebounds. While Hudson led the Lightning, senior guard Ashley Rosario contributed 11 points with five rebounds and three assists. Nyack was led by senior guard Khamari Tellis, who had 10 points with 12 rebounds.
Series Business: Nyack
The Lightning and the Warriors will be meeting for the 18th time in a series that Goldey-Beacom leads by a slim 9-8 margin. However, the Lightning have won the last two games in convincing fashion by an average of 28.5 points. Prior to the Lightning's current win streak, the Warriors won three straight games from 2008-10 to end a four-game win streak by Goldey-Beacom.
Richardson Records First “Triple Double” in Lightning's Win Over Post
Senior guard Devonne Richardson became the first player in Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball history to record a “triple double” when she accomplished the feat against Post University on Jan. 26. The Baltimore, Md. native scored a game-high 14 points with 11 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists while leading the Lightning to a 68-45 victory over the Eagles at the Jones Center. It marked the sixth “triple double” game in NCAA Division II and is believed to be the first by a player in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference since Feb. 15, 2005 when Leah Shumoski of the University of the Sciences scored 13 points with 11 rebounds and 10 assists against the Lightning in an 80-70 victory.
Too Close for Comfort
Of the Lightning's 16 victories this season, nine of them have been decided by nine points or less. In addition, the Lightning have won two of their games this year with a field goal in the closing seconds of regulation. On Nov. 12, senior guard Jacinda Jones gave Goldey-Beacom a 67-66 victory at Kutztown with a field goal with two seconds remaining. Senior guard Devonne Richardson scored on a lay-up with 5.8 seconds left in regulation on Dec. 8 to break a 53-53 tie against Caldwell.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Dominican College for a 1 p.m. CACC contest against the North Division-leading Chargers. The Lightning will be looking to avenge a 48-46 loss in last year's CACC quarterfinals.
