Lightning Trying to Earn 4th Straight Win Over Warriors

The Lightning have won three straight games against the Warriors.

Opening Tip-Off
Looking to earn their second straight win, the Lightning will begin a two-game road trip on Wednesday night by visiting Nyack College for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest against the Warriors at Bowman Gymnasium. Opening tip-off in the second game of a CACC doubleheader is slated for approximately 7 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game between the Lightning and the Warriors. In addition, live video and live stats for Saturday's game will be available via the Warriors' official athletics website, athletics.nyack.edu. 

Updating the Lightning
Now 7-15 overall and 3-10 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, the Lightning have won two of their last three games after an exciting 86-83 overtime triumph against Lincoln University last Wednesday night at the Joseph West Jones College Center. Sophomore guard Marcus Porter recorded his second career 30-point effort after scoring a game-high 30 points while matching his career high with 14 rebounds. Meanwhile, junior guard A.J. Picard contributed 18 points while freshman guard Gio Atkins added a season-high eight assists. Porter, who has tallied 20 or more points in three consecutive games, is the Lightning's leading scorer and ranks fifth in the CACC with a 17.0 average while ranking second on the team by grabbing 7.4 rebounds per contest.

Scouting Nyack
Currently 5-16 overall and 3-11 in the CACC, the Warriors will be looking to earn their third straight victory when they host the Lightning on Wednesday evening. Nyack, which earned back-to-back wins for the first time since 2010, edged Caldwell by a 48-45 margin in a CACC North Division game last Wednesday night at Bowman Gymnasium. Sophomore guard Khalid Samuels scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Warriors while freshman forward Will Robinson added 11 points and team-high nine rebounds. Samuels is the Warriors' leading scorer with a 16.0 average while sophomore guard Chris Hampton has contributed 14.0 points per game. Robinson, who earned CACC Rookie of the Week honors last Monday, is averaging 10.8 points per game and leads the Warriors with a .479 field goal percentage. Coach Jason Crafton is in his first season as the Warriors' leader; he is a 2003 graduate of Nyack and spent seven years as an assistant coach at the United States Naval Academy.

Series Business: Nyack
The Lightning and the Warriors will be meeting for the 18th time in a series that Nyack leads by a 10-7 margin. Goldey-Beacom has won the last three games in the series and has averaged 86.0 points per game during the win streak. The Warriors won eight of the first nine meetings before the Lightning won six of the last nine games.

A Look at Last Year's Meeting
Junior guard A.J. Picard led four Goldey-Beacom players in double figures with a team-high 20 points as the Lightning erupted for a season-high 101 points en route to a 101-72 victory over Nyack at the Joseph West Jones College Center in last year's meeting. Picard, who posted a “double double” with 20 points and 10 rebounds, made 6 of 12 field goal attempts, including a three-for-eight effort from three-point range, while converting five of six free throws. Meanwhile, Tariq Uqdah added a “double double” with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Lightning shot 53.3 per cent from the field, including a 60.5 per cent effort in the second half. Jose Pena-Benjamin led Nyack with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds.

Streaks, Storylines and Sidebars
• Of the Lightning's seven wins this season, four of them have come at home. In addition, the win over Lincoln snapped a four-game home losing streak.
• After edging Lincoln by an 86-83 margin last Wednesday night, the Lightning improved to 2-0 in overtime games this season. In addition, the Lightning have now won six straight overtime games, dating back to the 2010-11 season.
• The Lightning enter Wednesday's game ranked second in the CACC by averaging 4.1 blocked shots per game. They have recorded 21 blocked shots in the last six games.
• Sophomore guard Marcus Porter became the second Goldey-Beacom player to score 30 points in a game this season with his 30-point effort against Lincoln. On Jan. 15, junior guard A.J. Picard recorded a career-high 38 points in a 105-99 loss against Chestnut Hill.
• Over the last three games, Porter is averaging 23.3 points per game with at least 20 points in each contest. He has also grabbed 36 rebounds in the last three games, including a career-high 14 rebounds in each of the last two outings.
• Porter has also scored 10 or more points in 22 consecutive games, dating back to last season. 
• After averaging just 1.7 points per game in his first seven games this season, sophomore guard Kyle Steinbergin has averaged 12.0 points per game in his last six outings. He has also scored 10 or more points in five of those six outings.

Porter Earns Second Straight CACC Honorable Mention Selection
After scoring a season-high 30 points in the Lightning's win over Lincoln last Wednesday, sophomore guard Marcus Porter earned his second straight honorable mention selection for the CACC's weekly awards on Monday afternoon. The Lightning's leading scorer with a 17.0 average, Porter made 11 of 23 shots from the floor in the 86-83 triumph and also matched his career high by grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. 

Livingston Sets Goldey-Beacom Career and Single-Season Blocks Records
Senior forward Lawrence Livingston has rewritten the Goldey-Beacom men's basketball single-season and career blocks record during his final year in a Lightning uniform. Entering Wednesday's game against Nyack, the Dover, Del. native has posted 105 blocks in his career, surpassing the previous school record of 98 that was set by Derek Savage from 2004-08. In addition, he broke Savage's single-season record on Feb. 2 against Felician with three blocks and now has 42 blocks in 21 games this year. Livingston ranks second in the CACC this season and 23rd in NCAA Division II through games of Feb. 10.

30 Something for Porter
Sophomore guard Marcus Porter recorded the second 30-point game of his college career in the Lightning's 86-83 victory over Lincoln last Wednesday night at the Joseph West Jones College Center. He also had a career-high 32 points in the Lightning's win over Dominican last year at the Jones Center. Porter, who is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 17.0 average, has tallied 20 or more points five times this year, including in each of the last three games. He has also moved into 11th place on the Lightning's all-time scoring list with 826 career points.

What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will be idle until Saturday, Feb. 16 when they travel to Dominican College for a 3 p.m. CACC clash against the North Division-leading Chargers. The Lightning edged Dominican by a 76-74 margin in last year's meeting at the Jones Center as sophomore guard Marcus Porter scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Lightning's comeback victory.
