RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior forward
Ariel Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half as No. 23 Shaw University (5-1) overcame a 10-point deficit to earn its third win in a row, an 82-66 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (5-5) at the Bears' C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Hatcher, who was one of three Shaw players to score in double figures, made seven of nine field goal attempts after the intermission as the Bears rallied from a 49-39 deficit with 16:12 remaining to earn the victory. She also added six rebounds and made all four of her free throw attempts in the win.
After battling to an 8-8 tie in the opening five minutes of the first half, the Lightning scored 15 of the next 19 points to take a 19-12 advantage with 9:55 left in the period on a pair of free throws by junior forward
Dakia Manning (Freire Charter H.S./East Lansdowne, Pa.).
The Lightning continued to extend their lead to 26-16 with 7:12 left in the opening stanza on a Manning jumper before the Bears answered by scoring 8 of the next 12 points to trim the deficit to 30-27 with 4:11 remaining.
But, Goldey-Beacom held onto its edge and led by a 38-35 margin at the intermission.
The Lightning upped their lead to 49-39 by tallying 11 of the first 15 points of the second half, including four points each from junior forward
Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.) and junior guard
Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill East H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.).
However, the Bears answered by going on a 16-1 spurt over the next six minutes to take a 57-50 advantage on a Hatcher jumper. Hatcher scored six of the Bears' points during the run.
From there, Shaw continued to build its advantage and led by as many as 19 points with 1:24 left.
While Hatcher led the Bears to the victory, sophomore guard
Kaula Jack (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) added 16 points by making 8 of 13 shots from the floor with three assists and five steals. Sophomore guard
Bryann Guyton (Richfield, Minn.) contributed 12 points with 7 rebounds for the Bears, who shot 52.3 per cent from the field.
Chukwueze led the Lightning in the loss with a team-high 21 points, making 9 of 15 field goal attempts. She also tallied eight rebounds with three steals. Meanwhile, freshman guard
Jasmyne Lewis (Rancocas Valley H.S./Mount Holly, N.J.) scored a season-high 15 points after shooting six-for-nine from the field and three-for-four at the free throw line.
The Lightning, who were playing a nationally-ranked opponent for the second straight game, will resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Wednesday, Dec. 18 by hosting Chestnut Hill College in the first game of a doubleheader at 6 p.m.
