No. 24 Adelphi Survives Upset Bid by Women's Basketball

Panthers Remain Undefeated With 73-64 Victory

WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior forward Samantha Milhaven (Long Island Lutheran H.S./Port Washington, N.Y.) came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points, including 11 in the first half, as No. 24 Adelphi University (9-0) held off a strong upset bid by Goldey-Beacom College (5-4) to edge the Lightning by a 73-64 margin at the Joseph West Jones College Center on Wednesday evening.

Led by six points by senior forward Jessica Kitrys (Sayreville War Memorial H.S./Parlin, N.J.), the Panthers sprinted out to a 17-6 lead in the opening six minutes of the first half. The Lightning scored five quick points to trim the margin to 17-11 before the Panthers used an 11-2 run to extend the advantage to 28-13 with 9:26 remaining on a three-point field goal by Milhaven.

From there, the Panthers continued to build their advantage en route to a 51-27 lead at the intermission.

With the Panthers leading by a 58-34 margin with 14:32 remaining in regulation, the Lightning used a 21-8 spurt over the next 11 minutes to trim the deficit to 66-55.

After the Panthers upped their lead to 71-56 by scoring five of the next six points, Goldey-Beacom narrowed the margin to 73-64 by scoring 9 of the next 13 points, but the Lightning were unable to get any closer.

Milhaven, who was one of four Adelphi players to score in double figures, made six of seven shots from the floor, including a five-for-six performance from three-point range. Meanwhile, Kitrys added 16 points by making 7 of 11 field goal attempts while contributing three rebounds.

Junior forward Kelly Mannix (Barrington H.S./Barrington, R.I.) tallied 11 points with seven rebounds while sophomore guard Lauren Nuss (Christ the King H.S./Garden City, N.Y.) came off the bench to add 10 points.

Junior forward Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.) led the Lightning in the loss by scoring a team-high 17 points while adding six rebounds. Junior guard Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill East H.S./Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman guard Jasmyne Lewis (Rancocas Valley H.S./Mount Holly, N.J.) each contributed 12 points.

The Lightning, who were playing their second consecutive home game, will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 14 when they travel to No. 23 Shaw University for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
