MANSFIELD, Pa. - Playing the first night home game in the program's history, Mansfield University (4-6-1) scored three goals in a span of eight minutes to build a 3-0 lead and held off Goldey-Beacom College (1-8) to earn a 3-1 non-conference victory over the Lightning at Karl Van Norman Field on Wednesday evening.
The Mountaineers ended a two-match losing streak with the win while handing the Lightning their second straight loss.
After a slow start to the first half, the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute when senior midfielder
Jessica Kerwin (Moorestown H.S./Bethlehem, Pa.) scored her second goal of the season on a shot from five yards.
Just over four minutes into the second half, the Mountaineers upped the advantage to 2-0 when senior midfielder
Danielle Murray (Averill Park H.S./Sand Lake, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season with a 10-yard shot off a pass from sophomore forward
Kelsey Chapman (Springside H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.).
Less than a minute later, freshman midfielder
Danielle Lentz (Boyertown H.S./Perkiomenville, Pa.) added an insurance goal when she scored on a 20-yard blast.
The Lightning ended the shutout bid in the 81st minute when sophomore
Sheridan Vincent-Gobble (Oak Ridge H.S./Conroe, Texas) scored after a pass from junior defender
Nicole Curry (Lenape H.S./Mount Laurel, N.J.).
But, the Lightning were unable to get any closer.
While the Mountaineers had three different players score a goal, junior goalkeeper
Alana Krieger (Elizabethtown H.S./Elizabethtown, Pa.) made two saves as Mansfield outshot Goldey-Beacom by a commanding 32-5 margin.
The Lightning will continue their two-match road trip on Saturday, Oct. 12 when they visit Felician in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Opening kick-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
