WILMINGTON, Del. – Senior midfielder
Janine Cascio (Kings Park H.S./Kings Park, N.Y.) scored three goals, including two in the second half, and added an assist as Philadelphia University (1-5-0, 1-3-0) earned its first win of the season, an 8-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (0-6-0, 0-6-0) at the Lightning's Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams, who had been limited to a single goal in their first five matches, ended a six-match losing streak, dating back to last year's loss in the CACC Championship Game. Meanwhile, the Lightning remained winless in six matches this season.
Cascio gave the Rams a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when she took a through pass from freshman midfielder
Morgan Graus (Hilton H.S./Rochester, N.Y.) and scored on a one-on-one opportunity with freshman goalkeeper
Cindell Aguirre (Coronado H.S./El Paso, Texas).
After junior defender
Michaela Van Antwerp (Andover H.S./Andover, Mass.) upped the Rams' advantage to 2-0 in the 31st minute, sophomore forward
Angela Ferro (Shelton H.S./Shelton, Conn.) tallied back-to-back markers for a 4-0 edge in the 65th minute.
Junior midfielder
Cristina Nasti (Montclair Kimberley Academy/Verona, N.J.) increased the margin to 5-0 with her first goal of the season off a Cascio feed with 17:40 remaining before a pair of Cascio goals just 90 seconds apart gave Philadelphia University a 7-0 lead.
With 7:47 remaining, junior defender
Hannah Palese (Haddon Heights H.S./Haddon Heights, N.J.) scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Graus.
While Cascio led the Rams with her seven-point effort, Ferro contributed two goals and Nasti added a goal and an assist.
Aguirre made five saves for the Lightning, who were outshot by a 24-7 margin. The Rams also had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Lightning will continue their four-match homestand on Thursday, Oct. 3 when they host Lincoln University in a non-conference match at 4 p.m.
