WILMINGTON, Del. – Led by another record-setting effort from senior guard
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.), Goldey-Beacom College (10-7, 7-1) set a school record by winning its seventh consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game with a convincing 71-44 victory over Wilmington University (3-13, 1-8) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Tuesday evening.
The Lightning, who have won seven of their last nine games, eclipsed the school record they set last year by winning their seventh straight conference game after a 65-61 overtime loss against the University of the Sciences on Nov. 20.
Meanwhile, Richardson added another school record to her ledger as she recorded four steals in the victory to increase her career total to 208 steals, passing
Erin Calloway (2000-04), who had 205 steals. Richardson now holds the school career records for assists, steals, free throws made and free throws attempted.
Led by a pair of field goals from Richardson, the Lightning sprinted out to a 12-2 lead in the opening five minutes of the first half. After the Wildcats trimmed the deficit with back-to-back baskets from sophomore forward
Tashea Plummer (Parkdale H.S./Landover Hills, Md.) and freshman guard
Tenicia Spence (Western H.S./Baltimore, Md.), the Lightning used another 12-2 run to expand their advantage to 24-8 with 7:46 left.
A 9-2 run by the Wildcats narrowed the margin to 26-17 with 5:19 remaining on a lay-up by junior guard
Amanda Walters (Eastern Tech H.S./Baltimore, Md.) before the Lightning ended the first half by scoring 7 of the final 11 points to take a 33-21 advantage into the intermission.
Led by five points from senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.), the Lightning expanded their advantage to 42-29 in the first five minutes of the second half.
The Wildcats trimmed the deficit to 42-33 with four quick points, but the Lightning put the game out of reach by going on a 19-5 run over a nine-minute span for a 61-38 lead with 4:59 left.
From there, the Lightning did not trail by fewer than 20 points in the closing minutes of the game.
Richardson, who was honored prior to the game for recording her 1,000th career rebound against Bloomfield on Saturday, was one of three Lightning players to score in double figures with 13 points. She made four of eight shots from the floor along with five of six free throw attempts. In addition, she tallied a team-high nine rebounds with four assists.
Meanwhile, Hudson contributed a game-high 14 points with eight rebounds and two blocked shots while sophomore forward
Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.) posted a season-high 10 points with nine rebounds and four assists.
Plummer led the Wildcats in a losing effort with 11 points and 10 rebounds while junior guard
Lauren Brown (C.H. Flowers H.S./Bowie, Md.) scored a team-high 13 points.
Goldey-Beacom held a 52-39 rebounding advantage over the Wildcats and recorded a season-high nine blocks en route to its eighth win in a row over its local rival.
The Lightning will travel to defending CACC champion and 14th-ranked Holy Family on Thursday evening for a 6 p.m. game against the Tigers. Meanwhile, Wilmington will host the University of the Sciences on Saturday.
