WILMINGTON, Del. – As the 2012-13 season continues, it seemed as though Goldey-Beacom senior guard
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) had accomplished just about every individual on-court honor in her career. But, until Saturday afternoon against Post, there was one thing that had not been crossed off - a "triple double."
With 14 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists, Richardson can now put a check mark next to that item on her accomplishment list after leading Goldey-Beacom College (13-8, 10-2) to its third win in a row, a 68-45 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Eagles (9-11, 7-6) at the Lightning's Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday afternoon.
Richardson, who narrowly missed recording a “triple double” in Goldey-Beacom's win over Philadelphia University on Wednesday night, became the first player in the Lightning's Division II era to record a “triple double.” In addition, it is the sixth “triple double” in NCAA Division II this season and the first by a CACC player.
After the Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead by connecting on three of their first four field goal attempts, the Lightning answered by going on a 10-2 run to take a 10-8 lead on a lay-up by senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.) with 12:39 remaining.
But, the Eagles and the Lightning traded the lead seven times until a pair of free throws by junior forward
Aubrey Latham (Fitch H.S./Mystic, Conn.) gave Post a 20-17 advantage with 6:50 left in the first half.
However, a three-point field goal by senior guard
Jacinda Jones (Concord H.S./Claymont, Del.) ignited a 15-3 run to end the first half, giving Goldey-Beacom a 32-23 edge at the intermission.
Led by six points from Latham, the Eagles narrowed the margin to 34-29 in the first three minutes of the second half. But, the Lightning answered by scoring 22 of the next 27 points to take a commanding 56-37 lead on a pair of free throws by Richardson with 7:22 left in the game.
After Post scored four of the next six points, the Lightning secured the victory by outscoring the Eagles by 10-4 in the final four minutes.
While Richardson led the Lightning to the victory, Hudson contributed 13 points and eight rebounds while Jones had 14 points by making four of eight three-point field goals along with both of her free throw attempts. Sewell came off the bench and added 10 points with eight rebounds as the Lightning outrebounded Post by a 46-41 margin.
Latham, who had scored 20 or more points in each of her last four games, was limited to just 11 points on 4-for-14 shooting from the field. Junior forward
Raven Wright-James (Middletown H.S./Middletown, Conn.) led the Eagles with 12 points along with six rebounds.
The Lightning, who have won 10 of their last 13 games, will visit the University of the Sciences on Tuesday night in a rematch of a Nov. 20 game that was won by the Devils in overtime by a 65-61 margin.
