Updating the Lightning
The Lightning have won 9 of their last 12 games following a wire-to-wire 76-52 victory over Philadelphia University at the Gallagher Center on Wednesday evening. Senior guard Jacinda Jones led the Lightning over the Rams by scoring a game-high 21 points after a 7-for-11 effort from three-point range. Meanwhile, seniors Devonne Richardson and Irene Hudson each posted a “double double” as the Lightning won their second straight game. Hudson scored 17 points and added 10 rebounds while Richardson nearly missed recording a “triple double” after scoring 10 points with 10 rebounds and a season-high nine assists. Richardson, who became the school's all-time leader in career rebounds, is the Lightning's leading scorer with a 12.2 average while also averaging a team-high 9.5 rebounds. Hudson is averaging 12.1 points per game and leads the team with a .492 field goal percentage.
Scouting Post
Currently 9-10 overall and 7-4 in the CACC, the Eagles have lost four of their last six games after a 65-61 loss against CACC North Division leader Dominican on Wednesday night at the Drubner Center. Junior guard Aubrey Latham made 8 of 11 shots from the floor, including four of five three-point field goal tries, en route to a team-high 20 points while junior guard Jessica Webber came off the bench to contribute 12 points with three steals. The second-leading scorer in the CACC with a 17.5 average, Latham has posted four consecutive 20-point efforts, including a 25-point performance in the Eagles' 64-49 victory over Mercy on Monday night. Meanwhile, graduate student forward Monique Chance is the team's leading rebounder with a 10.4 average while contributing 8.7 points per game. Coach Stephen Schuler is in his first season as the Eagles' leader after spending the 2011-12 season at Albertus Magnus.
A Look Back at Last Year's Meeting
Led by a 27-point, 10-rebound effort from senior guard Devonne Richardson, the Lightning earned their fifth straight win over Post University with a 75-59 victory at the Drubner Center. Richardson, who tallied 10 of her points during a game-clinching 20-5 run in the last nine minutes, made 9 of 14 shots from the floor and was 9 of 10 from the foul line. Meanwhile, senior forward Irene Hudson contributed 19 points and seven rebounds while senior forward Akilah Sewell nearly recorded a “double double” with 10 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Aubrey Latham led Post with 19 points by making 6 of 14 shots from the floor in addition to six of seven free throws. The Lightning shot 50.0 per cent from the field, including a blistering 61.5 per cent in the second half, and held a 48-35 rebounding advantage over the Eagles.
Series Business: Post
The Lightning and the Eagles will be meeting for the 16th time in a series that Goldey-Beacom leads by a 9-6 margin. In addition, the Lightning have won five straight games against Post by an average of 14.0 points per game. However, three of those five games have been decided by eight points or less. The Eagles won five of the first seven meetings from 2002 to 2006 before the Lightning countered by winning seven of the last eight affairs.
Another Game, Another Record for Richardson
With a 10-rebound performance against Philadelphia University on Wednesday night, senior guard Devonne Richardson became the Lightning's all-time rebounds leader, breaking the previous record set by Kim Rowley (2003-07). Richardson, who leads the CACC with 190 rebounds this season through games of Jan. 23, joined Rowley as the only players in school history (men's or women's) with 1,000 career rebounds against Bloomfield on Jan. 5. Richardson has posted 10 or more rebounds in nine games this season, including a season-high 16 rebounds against Caldwell on Dec. 8.
Hudson Named as Honorable Mention Selection for CACC Weekly Awards
After leading the Lightning to a 47-41 victory over Chestnut Hill last Tuesday evening, senior forward Irene Hudson was named as an honorable mention selection for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference weekly awards for the week ending Jan. 20. Hudson posted her 10th career “double double” in the win over Chestnut Hill by scoring 12 points with a season-high 13 rebounds. She made four of five field goal attempts and converted all four of her free throws as the Lightning earned their seventh straight win over the Griffins. Hudson, who also posted a career-high five steals, led a strong Lightning defensive effort that allowed a season-low 41 points.
Grand Theft Basketball
With four steals in the Lightning's 71-44 victory over Wilmington on Jan. 8, senior guard Devonne Richardson became the Lightning's all-time steals leader. Entering Wednesday's game against Philadelphia University, the Baltimore, Md. native has 211 career steals, passing the school record of 205 steals set by Erin Calloway from 2000-04. With 46 steals this season, Richardson ranks second in the CACC through games of Jan. 21 and has posted four or more steals in five games, including a season-high seven takeaways against Assumption on Nov. 17.
Too Close for Comfort
Of the Lightning's 12 victories this season, seven of them have been decided by seven points or less. In addition, the Lightning have won two of their games this year with a field goal in the closing seconds of regulation. On Nov. 12, senior guard Jacinda Jones gave Goldey-Beacom a 67-66 victory at Kutztown with a field goal with two seconds remaining. Senior guard Devonne Richardson scored on a lay-up with 5.8 seconds left in regulation on Dec. 8 to break a 53-53 tie against Caldwell.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will return to Philadelphia on Tuesday night to face the University of the Sciences in a key CACC South Division match-up at Bobby Morgan Arena that is set to tip-off at 6 p.m. It will be the second meeting between the two teams this season after the Devils escaped with a 65-61 overtime victory on Nov. 20 at the Joseph West Jones College Center.
