Opening Tip-Off
Looking to rebound from a tough 47-43 setback against 14th-ranked and defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champion Holy Family on Thursday night, the Lightning will return to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Monday evening to face Chestnut Hill in a CACC South Division match-up. Opening tip-off between the Lightning and the Griffins is set for 6 p.m. and live video and live stats for Tuesday's game will be available on the Lightning's official athletics website, www.gbcathletics.com.
Updating the Lightning
Currently 10-8 overall and 7-2 in the CACC, the Lightning enter Tuesday's game against the Griffins in second place in the CACC's South Division after dropping a narrow 47-43 decision against 14th-ranked Holy Family on Thursday evening at the Campus Center. The loss snapped the Lightning's school-record seven-game CACC win streak. Senior guard Jacinda Jones scored a season-high 22 points in a losing effort by making six of nine field goal attempts, including a five-for-eight performance from three-point range. Meanwhile, senior forward Irene Hudson posted her second “double double” of the season by scoring 12 points with 10 rebounds while senior guard Devonne Richardson added 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Scouting Chestnut Hill
Entering Tuesday's game against the Lightning, the Griffins have lost 11 of their last 12 games after a 55-46 setback against CACC South Division rival Philadelphia University on Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena. The Griffins, who are 2-12 overall and 0-7 in the CACC, were led by senior forward Lindsay Alexander, who scored a game-high 13 points while contributing five assists. In addition, sophomore guard Olivia Gorczynski added 12 points by making four of nine field goal attempts into addition to four of eight free throws. Alexander is the Griffins' leading scorer with an 11.4 average and is the only Griffin to start all 14 games this season. Entering Tuesday's game, she needs just 13 points to become the fifth player in school history to reach 1,000 points for their career. The Griffins will be trying to snap an 11-game CACC losing streak when they face the Lightning on Tuesday night. Chestnut Hill's last win in a CACC game came against Wilmington University on Feb. 9, 2012 in a 54-42 victory.
A Look Back at This Year's Earlier Meeting
Playing in the 100th game of her college career, senior guard Devonne Richardson scored a season-high 24 points and added nine rebounds as the Lightning earned their fifth win in the last six games with a 66-52 victory over the Griffins at Sorgenti Arena on Dec. 19. Richardson, who became the seventh player in school history to play 100 or more career games, tallied 14 of her 24 points in the second half as Goldey-Beacom defeated Chestnut Hill for the sixth straight time. Richardson made 7 of 12 shots from the floor and 9 of 11 free throws while adding five assists and five steals. Meanwhile, senior forward Lindsay Alexander led the Griffins in a losing effort with 15 points and five rebounds. The Lightning outrebounded Chestnut Hill by a 39-37 margin and forced the Griffins into 17 turnovers.
Series Business: Chestnut Hill
Tuesday's game between the Lightning and the Griffins will mark the 12th all-time meeting in a series that the Lightning lead by a commanding 9-2 margin. The Lightning have won the last six meetings in the series by an average margin of 11.8 points per game. In addition, the Lightning are a perfect 5-0 all-time at home against the Griffins. Both of the Griffins' wins in the series have been decided by a total of nine points - a 61-58 victory on Dec. 11, 2008 season and a 60-54 triumph on Dec. 12, 2009.
Post-Game Notes: #14 Holy Family 47, Goldey-Beacom 43
• The Lightning had their school-record seven-game win streak against CACC opponents snapped with the loss against Holy Family. Prior to Thursday, the Lightning's last CACC loss came on Nov. 20 against the University of the Sciences in an overtime thriller at the Jones Center.
• Holy Family now leads the all-time series by a 23-2 margin and has won four straight games in the all-time series.
• The Tigers have now won 18 consecutive home games dating back to last season. Holy Family's last loss at home came on Nov. 22, 2011 against the University of the District of Columbia in a 72-56 decision.
• The Lightning dropped their second game against a nationally-ranked opponent this season. On Dec. 28, Goldey-Beacom dropped an 82-69 decision against 18th-ranked and defending NCAA champion Shaw University.
• The 47 points scored by the Tigers on Thursday night marked their lowest single-game output since losing by a 45-43 margin against Nyack on Mar. 6, 2010 in the CACC Championship Game.
• Senior guard Devonne Richardson tallied 10 or more rebounds for the eighth time this season and moved within seven rebounds of setting the school record for career rebounds.
• Senior guard Jacinda Jones became the 10th player in Goldey-Beacom women's basketball history to play in at least 100 career games. She is also one of four active players to reach the milestone this season.
• Senior forward Irene Hudson tallied the ninth “double double” of her career, including her second “double double” this season, against the Tigers on Thursday night. In addition, she has now scored at least 10 points in 11 of her last 13 games.
Grand Theft Basketball
With four steals in the Lightning's 71-44 victory over Wilmington last Tuesday, senior guard Devonne Richardson became the Lightning's all-time steals leader. Entering Tuesday's game against Chestnut Hill, the Baltimore, Md. native has 208 career steals, passing the school record of 205 steals set by Erin Calloway from 2000-04. With 46 steals this season, Richardson is tied for the CACC lead through games of Jan. 14 and has posted four or more steals in five games, including a season-high seven takeaways against Assumption on Nov. 17.
Richardson Seeks to Break GBC Rebound Record
After recording 10 rebounds in the Lightning's 47-43 loss against 14th-ranked Holy Family on Thursday evening, senior guard Devonne Richardson enters Tuesday's game against Chestnut Hill needing just seven rebounds to become the school's career leader. Richardson, who leads the CACC with 175 rebounds this season through games of Jan. 14, joined Kim Rowley (2003-07) as the only players in school history (men's or women's) with 1,000 career rebounds against Bloomfield on Jan. 5. Richardson has posted 10 or more rebounds in eight games this season, including a season-high 16 rebounds against Caldwell on Dec. 8.
Too Close for Comfort
Of the Lightning's 10 victories this season, six of them have been decided by seven points or less. In addition, the Lightning have won two of their games this year with a field goal in the closing seconds of regulation. On Nov. 12, senior guard Jacinda Jones gave Goldey-Beacom a 67-66 victory at Kutztown with a field goal with two seconds remaining. Senior guard Devonne Richardson scored on a lay-up with 5.8 seconds left in regulation on Dec. 8 to break a 53-53 tie against Caldwell.
What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will be idle until Wednesday, Jan. 23 when they travel to Philadelphia University for the first of two regular season meetings against the Rams. Opening tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. in the 17th all-time meeting between the two teams. Philadelphia University holds an 11-5 lead in the series, but the Lightning have won five of the last six encounters.
