PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Entering Thursday night's game at the Campus Center, 14th-ranked Holy Family and Goldey-Beacom ranked among the top scoring defense leaders in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and both teams lived up to that billing.
However, the defending CACC champion Tigers (13-2, 7-1) overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to earn their 13th win in the last 14 games with an exciting 47-43 victory over the Lightning (10-8, 7-2). It also marked the Tigers' fourth straight victory over Goldey-Beacom.
Senior forward
Erin Mann (Villa Maria Academy/West Chester, Pa.) led the Tigers' second half surge by scoring 16 of her team-high 18 points after the intermission in addition to grabbing all of her team-high 10 rebounds en route to posting her sixth “double double” of the season.
Trailing by 35-25 with 9:52 remaining, the Tigers used a 13-3 run over the next five minutes to even the score at 38-38 on a three-point field goal by senior guard
Ana Cruz (Warwick H.S./Lititz, Pa.).
After a pair of free throws by senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.) regained the Lightning's advantage at 40-38, the Tigers scored six of the next eight points to take a 44-42 lead with 1:44 left.
Senior guard
Jacinda Jones (Concord H.S./Claymont, Del.) narrowed the margin to 44-43 by sinking one of two free throws with 1:34 left, but the Tigers secured the victory with a jumper from senior forward
Kelly Brady (Ocean City H.S./Ocean City, N.J.) and a free throw by Mann in the final 44 seconds.
Led by five points from Jones, the Lightning sprinted out to an early 12-3 lead in the game's first eight minutes. But, the Tigers answered back by scoring 9 of the final 14 points to close the margin to 17-12 at the intermission.
Mann scored the Tigers' first six points to begin the second half as Holy Family closed the margin to 20-18 with 16:24 remaining before a 9-3 run by the Lightning upped their advantage to 29-21 with 12:58 left.
A quick four-point spurt by the Tigers trimmed the deficit to 29-25 before Jones scored six consecutive points to give Goldey-Beacom its largest lead of the night and set up the Tigers' comeback.
In leading the Tigers to the victory, Mann made 8 of 15 shots from the floor and also connected on two of four free throws. Meanwhile, junior guard
Maggie Seratelli (Liberty H.S./Bethlehem, Pa.) came off the bench to contribute nine points.
Jones scored a season-high 22 points in a losing effort for the Lightning, making six of nine shots from the field, including a five-for-eight performance from three-point range. Meanwhile, Hudson recorded her second “double double” of the season by scoring 12 points with a team-high 10 rebounds.
The loss snapped the Lightning's school-record seven-game conference win streak and marked Goldey-Beacom's first CACC loss since a 65-61 overtime setback against the University of the Sciences on Nov. 20.
The Lightning will return to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Tuesday, Jan. 15 to host Chestnut Hill College in a CACC game at 6 p.m. It will be the second meeting between the two teams this season after Goldey-Beacom earned a 66-52 victory over the Griffins on Dec. 19 in Philadelphia.
Post-Game Notes:
• Holy Family now leads the all-time series by a 23-2 margin since the start of the 2002-03 season. Thursday's meeting marked the seventh game between the two teams since the start of the 2010-11 season.
• The Lightning lost to a nationally-ranked opponent for the second time this season. On Dec. 28, Goldey-Beacom dropped an 82-69 decision against 18th-ranked Shaw.
• The 47 points scored by the Tigers on Thursday night marked their lowest single-game total since losing by a 45-43 margin against Nyack on Mar. 6, 2010 in the CACC Championship Game.
• Despite being held scoreless against Holy Family, senior guard
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) recorded a team-high 10 rebounds and now needs just seven rebounds to become Goldey-Beacom's all-time rebounding leader.
• Richardson tallied 10 or more rebounds for the eighth time this season.
