NYIT Hands Women's Tennis First Loss of Season

Lightning Drop 8-1 Decision Against Bears

WILMINGTON, Del. – Led by graduate student Nelly Ciolkowski (Neuilly-Plaisance, France), New York Institute of Technology (6-0) extended its winning streak to six straight matches by posting an 8-1 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (4-1) at the DelCastle Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

While handing the Lightning their first loss of the season, the Bears extended their regular season win streak to seven consecutive matches, dating back to last season.

After Ciolkowski earned an 8-1 victory at number one doubles with sophomore Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain), she posted a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over sophomore Stephanie Puentes Robinson (Bogota, Columbia) at number one singles.

Meanwhile, Burinato defeated junior Rocio Cabanillas Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) by a 6-2, 6-4 score at number two singles.

Sophomore Rocio Benevant (Valencia, Spain) held off senior Blanca Sancho (Zaragoza, Spain) at number three singles to earn a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory while graduate student Madalina Florea (Galati, Romania) posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at number four singles over sophomore Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal).

Senior Gaby Rodriguez (Hermosillo-Sonora, Mexico) also earned a pair of wins for the Bears. After teaming up with junior Valeria Savina (Vologda, Russia) to post an 8-2 victory at number three doubles, Rodriguez defeated senior Vanessa Leon (Caracas, Venezuela) by a 7-5, 6-2 score at number five singles.

Meanwhile, Savina earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory over senior Melanie Bonomo (Maracay, Venezuela) at number six singles.

Correia and Cabanillas Moreno earned the Lightning's lone point by posting an 8-1 victory at number two doubles, marking the first match NYIT has lost in six matches this season.

The Lightning will return to action on Friday, Sept. 21 against Southern New Hampshire at the DelCastle Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
