WILMINGTON, Del. – Making her college debut, freshman midfielder
Karyn Anselmo (Kinnelon H.S./Kinnelon, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal with 1:32 remaining in regulation as Mansfield University (1-0-0) rallied to earn a 2-1 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (0-1-0) in the season opener for both teams at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field on Saturday afternoon.
Anselmo, who also contributed an assist in the victory, tallied the first goal of her college career when she scored on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box after passes from freshman defender
Nicole Semenza (Hazleton H.S./Lattimer Mines, Pa.) and freshman forward
Kelsey Chapman (Springside H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.).
The Lightning took a quick 1-0 lead in the game's eighth minute when senior forward
Kelly Williams (Copiague H.S./Copiague, N.Y.) headed in a pass from senior midfielder
Megan O'Connor (Archbishop Ryan H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) in front of the goal.
The Lightning held onto the one-goal advantage until the 65th minute when Anselmo sent a through ball to senior forward
Erika Moyer (Mifflinburg H.S./Mifflinburg, Pa.), who scored on a breakaway past senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Vetrano (Shore Regional H.S./Ocean, N.J.) to tie the game at 1-1.
Led by Moyer, the Mountaineers outshot the Lightning by a 14-13 margin, including a 9-4 edge in the second half. Senior goalkeeper
Alexis Wilhelm (Northern Lebanon H.S./Annville, Pa.) made five saves for the Mountaineers, including three in the first half.
Vetrano posted four saves in a losing effort for the Lightning.
The Lightning will open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Philadelphia University for a 4 p.m. match against the Rams. Meanwhile, Mansfield will host East Stroudsburg on Wednesday afternoon.
