WILMINGTON, Del. - Looking to begin the season with a victory, the Lightning women's soccer team will open its 2012 schedule on Saturday afternoon by hosting Mansfield University in a non-conference game at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field. Opening kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
The Lightning, who posted a 6-9-0 record last year, return 11 letter winners from last year's team, including five seniors. In addition, the Lightning return nearly 66 per cent of the team's goals from a season ago, including sophomore
Alexandra Smith, who led the team with 15 goals and 32 points. Meanwhile, senior forward
Kelly Williams led the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with 11 assists, which tied a school record.
Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Vetrano returns after appearing in five games last year. She posted a 1.05 goals against average and had an .846 save percentage, including a season-high six saves against Lincoln on Oct. 20.
Looking to improve on a 2-15-0 record from last year, the Mountaineers welcome back 13 letter winners from last year, including senior
Erika Boyer, who tallied three goals and two assists a season ago. Senior goalkeeper
Alexis Wilheim started 15 of 16 games last season while posting a 2.65 goals against average and a .798 save percentage.
The Lightning will be looking to avenge last year's 2-1 overtime setback against the Mountaineers in the season opener for both teams. Mansfield earned the win in the opening moments of the extra period on a goal by
Renae Bowman after Goldey-Beacom tied the game late in regulation on a marker from Williams.
After Saturday's season opener, the Lightning will embark on a two-game road trip on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Philadelphia University for a 4 p.m. match against the Rams in the CACC opener for both teams.
