Briana Richmond-Peters' jumper with 27 seconds left in overtime lifted Goldey-Beacom College to a thrilling, 71-69 victory over Philadelphia University at the Joseph West Jones Center Thursday, securing the team's first-ever series sweep. The sophomore forward - who came off the bench to provide five points and nine rebounds - capped a rollercoaster ride of a ballgame that featured 10 ties and 18 lead changes. Early on, the third-place Lightning (11-4, 16-6 CACC) jumped out in front, 16-5, before the second-place Rams (18-6, 12-3 CACC) rattled off 12 straight points to grab a 17-16 lead. A 13-6 Philly U. spurt transformed a 32-30 GBC lead at the half into a 43-38 deficit, but a jumper by junior forward Irene Hudson (19 points, 11 rebounds) triggered a 15-4 run that put the hosts back on top, 53-47 with 8:33 let. Back came the Rams with a 15-7 flurry as Taylor Peltzer nailed a tying 3-pointer and Stephanie Agger (eight points, 10 rebounds, six assists) hit a free throw with 1:55 to go, making it 62-60 in favor of Philadelphia. It stayed that way until sophomore guard Melanie Johnson (seven points off the bench) hit the tying basket with 13 ticks remaining. Thanks to a steal by junior swing Devonne Richardson on the ensuing possession, Goldey-Beacom had a chance to win it in regulation.
However, Richardson's shot attempt missed the mark, securing the extra session. The Rams jumped in front, 68-65 at the 3:14 mark, but the Lightning answered with the next four points, culminating in a Richardson steal and lay-up that made it 69-68 with 2:30 on the clock. A Peltzer free throw with 46 seconds showing evened the score and set up Richmond-Peters' game winner. Still, the closing seconds were pretty intense as Hudson missed a chance to seal the deal at the line, and Samantha Morris' potential game-winning 3-pointer missed the mark at the horn. Richardson racked up 13 points, nine rebounds and five steals for Goldey, which also landed junior forward Akilah Sewell in twin figures with 12 points and eight rebounds. Najah Jacobs topped Philadelphia's scorecard with 17 points off the bench. The Lightning - which next plays at Caldwell College on Saturday afternoon - dominated the glass, 57-45, including 30-13 on the offensive end, resulting in a lopsided 86-59 bulge in field goal attempts and 21-3 advantage in mistake points.
