Women's Basketball Returns From Holiday Break to Host Shaw

Lightning to Face Defending NCAA Champions on Friday

Ashley Rosario and the Lightning will face nationally-ranked Shaw University on Friday afternoon.

Opening Tip-Off
Looking to complete a successful month of December, the Lightning return from their holiday break on Friday afternoon to host 18th-ranked and defending NCAA Division II champion Shaw University in a non-conference game at the Joseph West Jones College Center. Opening tip-off in the first meeting between the two teams is slated for 2 p.m. In addition, live stats for Friday's game will be available via the Lightning's official athletics website, www.gbcathletics.com.    

Updating the Lightning
Currently 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, the Lightning enter Friday's game trying to earn their sixth victory in the last seven games. The Lightning, who have a 4-1 record in the month of December, will be playing for the first time since a 66-52 victory over Chestnut Hill on Dec. 19 in Philadelphia. Senior guard Devonne Richardson led the Lightning to the victory by scoring a season-high 24 points with nine rebounds. She also contributed five assists and five steals as Goldey-Beacom earned its seventh straight win over the Griffins. The eighth-leading scorer in the CACC, Richardson is averaging 14.1 points per game this season and also ranks fourth in the CACC by grabbing 10.1 rebounds per contest. Meanwhile, senior forward Irene Hudson is averaging 11.6 points per contest after scoring nine points against Chestnut Hill.

Scouting Shaw
Ranked 18th in the latest USA Today Division II Coaches Poll, the Lady Bears will be looking to extend their four-game winning streak when they visit the Lightning on Friday afternoon. Off to a 5-1 start this season, the Lady Bears are coming off a 59-57 victory at Lynn University on Dec. 19. Senior forward Taylor Dalrymple led the Lady Bears to the victory by recording a "double double" with 13 points a game-high 11 rebounds while junior guard Kearah Jeffreys added a game-high 15 points off the bench. Senior guard Ronika Ransford is the Lady Bears' leading scorer with a 14.0 average while Jeffreys is contributing 13.5 points per outing. The Lady Bears are currently in the middle of an eight-game road trip that will continue at the University of the District of Columbia Winter Classic this weekend.

Rosario to Play in 100th Career Game
Senior guard Ashley Rosario is expected to become the eighth player in school history to play 100 career games when the Lightning host the Lady Bears on Friday afternoon. A four-year letter winner for the Lightning, the Levittown, Pa. native has played in all 14 games this season and is averaging 7.0 points per game. She scored a season-high 17 points against Caldwell on Dec. 8, making seven of eight field goal attempts along with three of four free throws. Rosario, who has started 71 of 99 career games, ranks 10th in school history with 142 career assists.

Richardson Receives Honorable Mention Notice from CACC
After leading the Lightning to a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over local rival Wilmington on Dec. 10, senior guard Devonne Richardson earned honorable mention notice for the CACC's weekly awards last week. The Baltimore, Md. native averaged 16.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in two contests, including 22 points with 13 rebounds against the Wildcats in an 84-53 victory. She also contributed 10 points with 8 rebounds against Molloy in a 60-52 loss on Dec. 12. The Lightning's leading scorer with a 14.1 average, Richardson has tallied 10 or more points in10 of the Lightning's 14 games this season.

Another Quest for 1,000 for Richardson
Senior guard Devonne Richardson has the opportunity to become the second player in school history to record 1,000 career rebounds this season. After posting nine rebounds against Chestnut Hill last Wednesday, the Baltimore, Md. native ranks second in school history with 987 career rebounds and needs 40 rebounds to become the school's all-time leader. With 142 rebounds in 14 games this season, Richardson ranks fourth in the CACC with a 10.1 average. 

Too Close for Comfort
Of the Lightning's eight victories this season, five of them have been decided by seven points or less. In addition, the Lightning have won two of their games this year with a field goal in the closing seconds of regulation. On Nov. 12, senior guard Jacinda Jones gave Goldey-Beacom a 67-66 victory at Kutztown with a field goal with two seconds remaining. Senior guard Devonne Richardson scored on a lay-up with 5.8 seconds left in regulation on Dec. 8 to break a 53-53 tie against Caldwell.

What's Ahead for Goldey-Beacom
The Lightning will resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Saturday, Jan. 5 when they travel to Bloomfield College for a 1 p.m. game against the Deacons. The Lightning edged the Deacons by a 64-61 margin in last year's meeting at the Jones Center as senior forward Irene Hudson scored 18 points with 12 rebounds.
