Strong Second Half Sends Maryland Past Women's Basketball

Terrapins Post 84-46 Victory in Lone Exhibition

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior forward Tianna Hawkins (Riverdale Baptist H.S./Clinton, Md.) scored a game-high 20 points and added 15 rebounds as the University of Maryland used a strong second half to earn an 84-46 exhibition victory over Goldey-Beacom College in front of an announced crowd of 3,369 fans at the Comcast Center on Monday evening.

Led by Hawkins, the Terrapins shot 50.0 per cent from the field in the first half to build a 38-27 advantage. Hawkins made six of eight shots from the field in the opening stanza and grabbed 12 of her game-high 15 rebounds as Maryland held a 24-14 rebounding edge.

The Terrapins, who are ranked fifth in the Associated Press preseason Division I poll, extended their lead to 73-33 in the opening 14 minutes of the second half by going on a 35-6 run. Hawkins scored eight of her points during the run as Maryland pulled away to earn the victory. 

From there, the Terrapins never trailed by fewer than 34 points en route to the win.

While Hawkins led the Terrapins with a "double double," junior center Alicia DeVaughn (Blanche Ely H.S./West Palm Beach, Fla.) added 17 points and eight rebounds. She made 5 of 10 shots from the floor and was seven-for-nine from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, freshman forward Tierney Pfirman (South Williamsport H.S./Williamsport, Pa.) came off the bench to score 13 points with four rebounds and three assists.

Senior guard Jacinda Jones (Concord H.S./Claymont, Del.) led the Lightning with 15 points, including 12 in the first half, while senior guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman H.S./Levittown, Pa.) contributed 10 points with a team-high seven rebounds.

Senior guard Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) added seven points with seven rebounds and a game-high eight assists for the Lightning, who tallied 11 assists on their 18 made field goals.

The Lightning, who posted a school-record 19 wins last year, will open their regular season schedule on Friday, Nov. 9 when they visit St. Thomas Aquinas for a 5 p.m. non-conference game. Meanwhile, the Terrapins will open their season on Friday night against Mount St. Mary's at the Comcast Center.
