WILMINGTON, Del. – Sophomore guard Brianne Traub (Eastern Christian H.S./Wayne, N.J.) scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in overtime as the University of the Sciences (2-4, 1-1) overcame a late rally by Goldey-Beacom College (3-3, 0-1) to earn a 65-61 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Lightning at the Joseph West Jones College Center on Tuesday evening.

Led by Traub, the Devils earned their first victory at Goldey-Beacom since the 2008-09 season while spoiling the Lightning's home opener.

After senior forward Akilah Sewell (Baltimore City College H.S./Baltimore, Md.) gave Goldey-Beacom a 57-56 lead with 3:08 left in the overtime period, Traub scored five consecutive points as the Devils took a 61-57 advantage with 2:23 left in the stanza.

Senior guard Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) cut the Lightning's deficit to 61-59 with a lay-up with 1:16 remaining before Traub added a pair of free throws to regain the Devils' four-point edge with 35 seconds left.

With 22 seconds left, Richardson converted a pair of free throws to narrow the gap to 63-61, but a pair of free throws from senior guard Elsebeth Birman (St. John's College H.S./Silver Spring, Md.) sealed the victory.

Led by four points from senior Becca Ruggear (Oxford Area H.S./Collingford, Pa.), the Devils took an early 11-4 lead in the first eight minutes of the opening period. But, the Lightning answered by scoring the next seven points, including five points from senior guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman H.S./Levittown, Pa.) to tie the game at 11-11 with 8:17 left in the first half.

After the teams battled to a 15-15 tie later in the opening stanza, the Devils scored six straight points on a pair of three-point field goals from Traub to regain a six-point edge with 1:55 remaining before the intermission.

The Lightning narrowed the gap to 21-19 in the closing 71 seconds on back-to-back field goals from Sewell and sophomore forward Chelsea Grover (Seneca H.S./Southampton, N.J.).

The Devils opened the second half by scoring 10 of the first 14 points to take their biggest lead of the game at 31-23 with 15:25 remaining on a pair of Ruggear free throws. After narrowing the margin to 32-28 with 13:07 remaining in the second half, the Lightning went on an 11-4 run to close the gap to 42-41 on a Rosario jumper with 7:13 remaining.

Following a pair of free throws by Ruggear, the Lightning answered with six consecutive points to take a 47-44 lead with 5:10 left on a lay-up from senior forward Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.). But, the Devils responded with a 7-1 spurt to regain a 50-48 edge with 1:39 remaining.

After the teams traded lay-ups, Birman connected on one of two free throws to give USciences a 53-50 lead with 17 seconds remaining.

The Lightning, who trailed for most of the second half, sent the game into overtime when Richardson connected on a wild three-point attempt that bounced off the back of the rim and fell through the net as time expired in regulation.

Traub, who recorded her first “double double” of the season, made 8 of 19 shots from the floor while grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Jessica Sylvester (Nazareth Academy/Trevose, Pa.) added 14 points while contributing two assists and three steals.

Richardson scored a season-high 19 points to lead the Lightning in a losing effort by making 6 of 16 field goal attempts in addition to six of eight free throw attempts. She also added nine rebounds and four assists for the Lightning, who lost their third straight game after a 3-0 start.

Meanwhile, Hudson posted her first “double double” of the season with 10 points and a season-high 11 rebounds while Sewell scored a season-high 13 points with seven rebounds.

The Lightning will begin a three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon by competing in the Dowling Holiday Tournament against the host Golden Lions at 2 p.m.
