Women's Soccer Ends Season With 6-1 Loss at Nyack

NYACK, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Stacey Cervantes (Whitter, Calif.) and freshman forward Selena Vargas (Swan Lake, N.Y.) each scored two goals and added an assist to lead Nyack College (8-7-1, 7-4-1) to its third win in the last four matches, a 6-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (3-13-0, 1-11-0) at the Warriors' Moseley Field on Saturday afternoon.

Led by Cervantes and Vargas, the Warriors scored a season-high six goals in the victory while handing the Lightning their fifth straight loss.

The Warriors took a quick 1-0 lead in the third minute when freshman Cyan Jean-Baptiste (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) scored off an assist from senior defender Stephanie Mercier (Granby, Conn.).

With 16:36 remaining in the first half, the Warriors upped their advantage to 2-0 when Cervantes headed in a corner kick from senior midfielder Sabrina Caires (Vallejo, Calif.) for her sixth goal of the season.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Vargas extended the cushion to 3-0 when she scored off an assist from Cervantes before scoring her second goal of the match just over a minute later after a pass across the goal area from junior midfielder Heather Wakeley (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Caires upped the margin to 5-0 in the 56th minute when she scored from the top of the penalty area after a pass from Vargas.
In the 63rd minute, Cervantes tallied her second goal of the match when she converted a penalty kick past Goldey-Beacom senior goalkeeper Alyssa Vetrano (Shore Regional H.S./Ocean, N.J.).

With 6:43 remaining in regulation, freshman forward Tiffany Kelly (Parsippany H.S./Parsippany, N.J.) ended the Warriors' shutout bid when she converted a pass from senior forward Kelly Williams (Copiague H.S./Copiague, N.Y.) for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

While Vargas and Cervantes each scored two goals with an assist, Caires added a goal with an assist as the Warriors outshot the Lightning by a 28-5 margin. Nyack also had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

One of five Goldey-Beacom seniors playing in the final match of their career, Vetrano made eight saves while Williams tallied the 15th assist of her career to move into third place on the Lightning's all-time list.
