Freshman guard
Marcus Porter scored 10 of his game-high19 points during a vital 13-4 run, helping Goldey-Beacom College rally from an 11-point halftime deficit and defeat Post University at the Drubner Center, 67-62, to seize first place in the CACC's South Division. Trailing 49-47 with just over six minutes to play, Porter slammed one home as part of a 3-point play to ignite the rally, putting the Lightning on top to stay. On the next possession, he converted a lay-up, then capped the run by draining a three with 2:18 left, providing his team with its largest lead of the afternoon, 60-53. The Eagles closed within a basket twice down the stretch, including 64-62 on a lay-up by junior point guard Jake Wilcox with 14 seconds to go, but rookie guard
Curtis Hopkins calmly sank two free throws two seconds later, effectively clinching Goldey-Beacom's fourth straight win and improving its record to 11-7 overall. The win - coupled with Philadelphia University's 62-61 loss at Caldwell - lifted the Lightning into sole possession of first place with an 8-2 conference mark, one half-game ahead of both the Rams and Chestnut Hill Griffins (winners at Felician College Saturday). Porter added nine rebounds for Goldey, which also received 11 points and five rebounds apiece from postgraduates Rich Fleming and
Ido Yehuda; the former adding three blocked shots to his line. The Lightning held the lead for only one possession in a first half that ended with Post on top 32-21. However, the visitors came alive when play resumed, triggering a 20-5 run over the first 7:14 of the period to open up a 41-37 advantage. Senior forward
Tariq Uqdah was the key figure in the surge, accounting for nine of his 10 points in the stretch, beginning with a monster dunk. The game remained tight the rest of the way, until Porter took over late. Backup sophomore guard Zack Krischer totaled 16 of his 17 points in the first half for Post (8-12,
6-5 CACC), with most coming on the strength of five 3-pointers.
Goldey-Beacom outshot the Eagles, 46%-31%, including a massive 54%-23% differential in the second half. Post made more long-range shots (7-4) but attempted more than three times as many (27-8), and scored more often as a result of turnovers (29-14). Rebounding was a virtual dead heat (40-38 GBC).
The Lightning - who captured three victories in three cities in five days - will next be in action Tuesday night vs. Washington Adventist in Takoma Park, MD. The final non-conference game of the campaign will tip off at 7:00 pm.
