ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Jacinda Jones scored 13 of her game-high 18 in the second half and led the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team on a furious second-half comeback to earn the program's first-ever regular season victory at the Hennessy Center over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Dominican College, 59-50 in the 2010-11 regular season finale for both squads.
GBC, already positioned as the South Division's third-place team going into this week, improved to 15-11 overall and 13-6 in the CACC. Dominican (9-17, 7-12 CACC) could not win on its Senior Night and now needs USciences to beat Post on the road tomorrow, Feb. 26 to lock up the fourth and final playoff spot out of the North.
The Lightning erased a 34-25 halftime deficit by dominating the second-half and outscoring the Chargers 34-16. They held Dominican to 6-of-31 (19-percent) shooting from the field in the second half and only sent the Chargers to the line for six free-throws in the frame. Meanwhile, GBC shot 35-percent from the field and canned an impressive 12-of-13 (92-percent) at the stripe in the closing frame.
Sophomore forward Irene Hudson pitched in 14 off the bench while senior guard Janae Weldon registered 11 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Shanice Scully, one of two Dominican seniors honored before the game, led three Chargers in double-figures with 14 while Meghan Murphy tallied 13 and Lindsey Lopez finished with 11.
The two squads traded baskets early on, but with the score knotted at 14 with 11:37 left in the first half, Dominican went on a 16-3 tear to take a 32-17 lead with 4:45 left on the clock. The Lightning outscored DC 8-2 in the remainder of the half courtesy of two consecutive jumpers by Weldon, and cut the lead to 34-25 at the break.
Riding that momentum from the end of the first half, GBC outscored DC 19-9 in the first 11-and-a-half minutes of action after the break and took a 44-43 lead with 8:47 left in regulation. Then with the score tied at 50, Weldon's outlet pass resulted in an and-one play for Hudson at the 1:20 mark, and the Lightning went on to ice the game with 6-of-6 shooting at the stripe. Weldon was 4-for-4 during that stretch.
GBC outscored DC 24-6 in points in the paint and the Lightning's bench walloped the Chargers' bench 16-3 in bench points.
The Lightning, who will be on the road the rest of the way this season, improved to 9-5 in away games this year. They take on USciences in the CACC quarterfinals at Bobby Morgan Arena on Mon. at 7 p.m.
