ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Senior Sam McDuffie led all scorers with 21, but the Goldey-Beacom College men's basketball team could not overcome a miserable bus ride to the Hennessy Center and a 40-15 barrage that spanned the halves by the Chargers as the Lightning fell on the road to Dominican, 83-73 on Fri. night in both teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular season finale.
GBC, which clinched the No. 1 seed out of the South Division with an emotional win over PhilaU on Wed. night, fell to 17-10 overall and 12-5 in league play with the loss while the North Division's No. 3 seed, Dominican improved to 16-12 (12-6 CACC).
Senior guards Jon Crawford and Azeez Ellegood were the other two Lightning scorers in double-figures with 12 and 10, respectively. The game was delayed 45 minutes because the Goldey-Beacom bus was travelling through floods and at one point broke down.
Dominican was led by Almin Hodzic, who registered a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Leon Porter (19 points) and Cory Quimby (15 points, 6-of-6 from the field) were the other two Chargers in double-figures for the night.
The first-half was a very competitive affair featuring three ties and five lead changes, but a 20-4 Charger blitz in the last 5:36 of the first half left the Lightning in shock as GBC went down 48-39 at the break.
Dominican rode that momentum into the early stage of the second half, outscoring GBC 20-11 over the first 9:53 after halftime to take a commanding 68-50 lead.
The Lightning refused to pack it in though as they outscored the Chargers 13-4 over the final 3:26, but it was too little too late. DC outshot GBC, 53-percent to 41-percent from the field and was 8-of-13 from three-point range while the Lightning were 7-of-19.
GBC will host USciences on Tues. at 7 p.m. in the South Division's No. 1 vs. No. 4 quarterfinal matchup.
