PIKE CREEK, Del. - Freshman
Marcus Porter scored a season-high 32 points to lead all scorers and send the Goldey-Beacom College men's basketball team to an improbable 21-point comeback win over Dominican, 76-74 as the Lighting moved to 3-0 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a victory on Sat. afternoon at the Jones Center.
With the win, GBC also evened its overall mark at 4-4 on the season while Dominican fell to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in league play. The Lightning have now won 11 straight regular season conference home games dating back to last season and including their three wins at the Jones Center this year which have come by a combined six points. This was the program's first win over the Chargers in the last three tries.
Porter shot 13-of-17 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range as his game-high 32 was the most points ever scored by a Lightning freshman in the school's history. His step-back three-pointer with 17 seconds left in regulation gave the hosts their first lead of the game (75-74) since around the 15-minute mark of the first half. That three completed Porter's 21-point second-half explosion that saw him shoot 9-of-10 from the field (2-of-3 3Pt. FG).
Also playing key roles in the Lightning win were: senior forward
Tariq Uqdah (15 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals),graduate student guard
Ido Yehuda (11 points, five rebounds, three assists) and sophomore guard
A.J. Picard (nine points, seven rebounds, two assists). In addition, graduate point guard
Jordan Brooks had a team-high four assists to go with four points and five rebounds and junior forward
Lawrence Livingston had his fourth multiple-block game of the season with three.
Leading the charge for Dominican were forward Cory Quimby (19 points, 10 rebounds), guard Leon Porter (11 points, 11 assists) and reserve Daniel Woods (12 points, five rebounds).
The Lightning trailed 45-29 at halftime and were outscored 9-4 in the opening 2:30 after the break as they dug themselves a 21-point hole after a jumper by Dominican's Porter.
When it seemed as though GBC was down-and-out,
Marcus Porter's three-pointer at the 17:21 mark sparked an 11-0 Lightning surge, culminating in a Porter conventional three-point play to cut the deficit to 10 with 13:52 left to play. Then, after Dominican pushed its lead back to 13, two Porter jumpers highlighted an 8-0 Lightning run to shrink the lead to five.
Still trailing by five with 1:17 showing on the clock, Porter hit another jumper to make it a three-point game just before the one-minute mark. After Dominican's Preston Smith made 1-of-2 at the stripe, Uqdah converted a three-point play on an and-one lay-up and free-throw to help GBC close within a point, 73-72. Once more, the Lightning fouled Smith, who made just 1-of-2 at the foul line with 30 seconds left. That set the stage for Porter's final trey of the afternoon, and gave the Lightning their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.
Dominican worked the ball past midcourt and called a timeout with 8.8 seconds remaining in regulation. Out of the timeout, Uqdah thought he had a steal, but a reaching foul was called, sending Gerald Hill to the line with six seconds remaining, shooting two. He missed both, and Yehuda skied for the rebound and was immediately fouled with three seconds left. Yehuda went to the line and made the first, missed the second. Hill came down with the rebound, and Dominican called a timeout. Out of the timeout, Hill's inbounds pass landed right in the arms of
Jordan Brooks, and the Lightning came away victorious, 76-74.
The Lightning shot a scorching 62-percent (16-of-26) from the field in the second half as they outscored the Chargers 47-29 in the second frame and erased what was once a 21-point deficit at the 17:46 mark. Dominican shot slightly better from the field for the game (52-percent to 50-percent) but poor free-throw shooting (8-of-21, 38-percent) hurt the Chargers' cause as they were doubled up in free-throws by the Lightning, who only shot 63-percent themselves (15-of-24).
Next up for GBC is a non-conference tilt at Molloy College of the East Coast Conference on Wed., Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.
