GBC Women Cruise to 66-55 Win Over Kutztown

PIKE CREEK, Del. - Goldey-Beacom went inside to junior forward Akilah Sewell early and often, and she cashed in for game-highs of 23 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Lightning to a convincing 66-55 victory at the Jones Center on Sat. afternoon.

The win moves GBC to 4-2 overall as the Lightning have now won three straight games after starting the season 1-2. Kutztown, a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, fell to 1-5 on the season.

Sewell had a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds in the first half alone, as she outscored the Golden Bears by herself to lead the Lightning to a 39-15 halftime cushion. GBC led by as many as 26 midway through the second period and still led by 20 with 1:26 remaining in the game before allowing Kutztown to close the game out on a 9-0 run to close the gap to 11 before the final horn.

Also scoring in double-figures for the Lightning was junior forward Devonne Richardson with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Classmate Irene Hudson pitched in with eight points and four boards.

In the first half, the Lightning held a commnding 30-18 rebounding edge and outscored KU 22-6 in the paint and 11-2 in second-chance points. They also forced 10 turnovers while committing only five and out-shot the Bears 40-percent to 19-percent from the field.

With the two teams knotted at six over three minutes ino the action, the Lightning went on a 13-3 surge over the next 4:30 minutes to pull ahead 19-9 after a three-pointer by Richardson. Following a Kutztown timeout, the Lightning tacked on four more points to up their lead to 14 at the 10:49 mark. They would close out the half on an 8-0 run, culminating in a putback layup by Sewell just before the buzzer, and take its largest lead of the half, 24, into the intermission.

Kutztown, who could just not find the range from long-distance in the first half (1-for-6 3-PT FG), took only two shots from behind the arc in the second frame. The Bears would outscore GBC in the paint 22-8 in the second half, force an even 17-17 tie in rebounding and shoot 55-percent from the field while holding the Lightning to 27-percent. The end result was the visitors outscored GBC, 40-27 in the second period, but it was too little too late, as the Lightning coasted to an 11-point victory, 66-55.

The Lightning have a week off before their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Dec. 3. That day, GBC will host the rematch of the 2010-11 CACC Finals, as they take on South Division rival, Holy Family University at 1 p.m.
