Saint Michaels, who lost to their second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference team to fall to 1-3 on the season, was led by three double-figure scorers: Mike Holton (17 points), Tyler Schilling (16 points) and Travis Warech (11 points).
The Purple Knights out-shot the Lightning 44-percent to 36-percent from the field and 89-percent (16-of-18) to 65-percent (17-of-26) from the foul line and also held a 37-33 rebounding edge, but Goldey-Beacom took much better care of the basketball with just eight turnovers to SMC's 18 while also distributing the ball more efficiently (11-7 assists).
Trailing 40-31 as the game approached the 13-minute mark of the second half, Yehuda's layup jumpstarted a 16-6 Lightning surge over the next six minutes whereby GBC toook its first lead in the frame, 47-46 on freshman guard
Curtis Hopkins' layup. Six lead changes and five ties later, a layup by senior transfer
Tariq Uqdah put the Lightning ahead to stay, 59-57 with exactly one minute showing on the clock. Picard and Yehuda would combine to make 5-of-6 at the line to ice the game for GBC.
The Lightning outscored their Northeast-10 opponent 34-29 in the second half after trailing 32-31 at the intermission. The first half featured 14 lead changes and four ties as neither team ever led by more than three. A buzzer-beating jumper by the Knights' Corey Crawford gave Saint Michael's a one-point halftime lead. Porter scored 16 of his game-high 20 in that first frame.
For the game, a very opportunistic Lightning squad turned 18 Saint Michaels turnovers into 17 points and their 11 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points, while GBC reserves made the most of their minutes, outscoring SMC's bench, 21-9.
The Lightning go on the road Tues. night to take on non-conference foe Lincoln University (Pa.) for a 7 p.m. tip.
