BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – In a highly-contested Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game that featured 15 ties and 21 lead changes and saw neither team lead by more than six, the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team succumbed to an inspired Concordia College team on the road at the Meyer Athletic Center Sat. afternoon.
With the loss, the Lightning fall to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in CACC play, but they still remain in second place among the CACC South Division standings, a game-ahead of third-place Philadelphia U. Meanwhile, Concordia improved to 2-10 on the season and earned its first conference win of the season.
Redshirt-junior guard Jacinda Jones turned in a season-high 27 points to lead all scorers on 10-of-23 shooting from the field. She also tied for a team-high six rebounds, blocked two shots and grabbed a game-high four steals. Sophomore forwards Akilah Sewell and Devonne Richardson each pulled down six boards and scored 14 and 12, respectively.
A pair of Jones free-throws at 7:17 gave the Lightning their final lead of the game, 60-59, but a jumper by Shelley Monahan at 6:23 put the Clippers ahead to stay, 61-60. A three-point play by Krystina Agard (17 points) and another jumper by Monahan gave Concordia the largest lead of the game by either team, 66-60 at the 5:07 mark. Monahan scored all 12 of her points in the second half to lead the Clippers down the stretch.
Five times the Lightning closed within two, as Jones and Richardson (who scored nine of her 12 in the second half) tried to will GBC back into the lead, but each time they fell short.
With a minute left in regulation and the Lightning trailing 74-70, Jones's three-point attempt fell off the mark, but senior forward Arielle Alford corralled the offensive rebound and gave the Lightning a second-chance. Richardson was fouled by Agard, and she sank both free-throws to pull GBC within two, 74-72.
After the Clippers melted some clock, Monahan spotted up to shoot an outside jumper but Jones alertly swatted it out of bounds with 36 seconds left on the clock. Seven seconds later, the Lightning forced a turnover out of bounds and called a timeout, trailing by two with 27 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing possession, Jones put up another errant three-point attempt, but it went out of bounds off Concordia with 16 seconds left. This time Jones tried to drive to the basket but could not get a layup to go down, and Agard was there for the rebound. Agard then made a pair of free-throws at the other end with five seconds left to seal the victory.
Concordia out-shot GBC 57-percent to 45-percent in the second half (45-percent to 40-percent for the game) and shot way better from three-point range (8-of-15 to 1-of-16). The Clippers also outrebounded the Lightning, 47-37. This was just the fourth time this season that GBC has been outrebounded, and the Lightning are 1-3 in those games. GBC did however take much better care of the ball, turning it over a season-low eight times compared to 20 miscues by Concordia.
Next up for GBC is a CACC South Division clash at the Jones Center against Georgian Court at 7 p.m. Two Lightning players are closing in on the 1,000-point marks for their careers as GBC gets set to take on the last-place Lions. Senior guard Janae Weldon, who scored two points today, needs 12 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Meanwhile, with her 27-point performance today, Jones now needs just five points to reach 1,000.
