JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's cross country team tied for 3rd place out of seven teams in the 4K race and 4th place out of six teams in the 6K race on Fri. afternoon at Liberty Park in the Stevens Invitational.

The Lightning, who came into this race having placed first in back-to-back weeks to begin the season, earned a team score of 45 to tie CUNY John Jay for third in the 4K and were just one point behind Middlesex County Community College as they took fourth place in the 6K with a score of 48.

“One of the goals the team had going into this invitational was to beat the host, Stevens, who beat us last year,” head coach Brian Conley said. “They were able to outplace the home team and stay one spot ahead in the 4K.”

According to Conley, freshman Jabari Chambers was crucial in helping the Lightning stay ahead of Stevens for third place in the 4K. Chambers finished just 12 seconds behind sophomore teammate David Zartler at 14:24.13 for 33rd place.

“Jabari went out very fast and held on as long as his legs could go,” Conley said. “His performance will hopefully be a boost to help strengthen the rest of the team.”

The reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rookie of the week, freshman Stewart Reich again paced the Lightning with a time of 12:47.05 in the 4K race and took sixth overall.

“Stewart ran against his toughest competition yet this season and he proved to be up to the challenge,” Conley said.

In the 6K race, the team was led by freshman Hugo Morales, who placed 18th with a time of 21:25.68. Junior Ben Kinley came in at 19th nearly 11 seconds later.

“Hugo just looked fabulous,” Conley said. “The combination of his effortless stride and constant pushing of the pace gave him GBC's top performance of the day.”

Senior Trevor Freburger pushed junior Paul Graybeal all throughout the course before Graybeal pulled away for a 27th place finish at 23:07.43. Freburger came in at 29th with a time of 23:15.53.
