VINELAND, N.J. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's cross country team had five runners place in the top-10 as it won the Cumberland County College Dukes Invitational on Sat. afternoon in the 2010 season-opening race.

The team finished the 5K race with an overall score of 32, well ahead of second-place Gloucester College, who had 47.

“This was a great way to start off the season,” fifth-year head coach Brian Conley said. “Our top runners performed at a high-level, and the most impressive part of the team win was the pack of three guys finishing in the top-ten and only 37 seconds apart from each other.”

Freshman Stewart Reich led the Lightning in his collegiate debut, placing second overall with a time of 17:15.

“Stewart was leading the men's race for a time, and then slipped back into third before he finished really strong to regain second place.”

Junior Ben Kinley, who led the Lightning in every meet last season, battled an ankle injury to place fifth with a time of 18:05. Then it was the pack of freshman Hugo Morales (7th place, 18:21), sophomore David Zartler (8th place, 18:40) and junior Paul Graybeal (10th place, 18:58) which proved pivotal in the Lightning's first-place finish as team.

Senior Trevor Freburger (15th) and junior Demetris Harding (36th) rounded out the GBC finishers with times of 19:35 and 22:38, respectively.

The Lightning will next compete on Sun., Sept. 19 at the Queensborough Community College Invitational which starts at 11 a.m.
