GBC Golf Opens Spring Season at St. James Plantation Tournament

SOUTHPORT, N.C.  – The Goldey-Beacom College golf team opened its spring season with a seventh-place showing in a field of seven schools at the St. James Plantation Invitational hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania this past weekend.
The Lightning had a team total of 679 (336, 343) in the two-round, par 72 tournament on a 6,374-yard course. Freshmen Michael Coppa Jr. (84, 82) and Devon Ripley (83, 83) led GBC with scores of 166 and tied for 25th overall. Junior Erik Tammsalu placed 42nd with a 182 (90, 92), and senior Matthew Quigley was 43rd at 187 (88, 99).
The host, IUP took first place, shooting 32 strokes over par at 608 and finishing well ahead of second-place California University of Pennsylvania (647) by 39 strokes. West Chester University finished third at 653, followed by the University of Charleston (655), and Clarion University (660). Fairleigh Dickinson (665) and GBC rounded out the bottom seven.
The Lightning are back in action this coming weekend at the St. Thomas Aquinas College Invitational in Ocean City, Md.
