PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team had its four-game win-streak snapped on Sat. afternoon at the Joseph West Jones Center as the visiting Chargers of Dominican College came away with a 64-57 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory in both teams' regular season finale.
The Lightning (16-11, 12-7 CACC) will be the No. 3 seed out of the CACC South Division and will play No. 2 Philadelphia University at the Gallagher Center Tues. night, 7 p.m.
In a game that featured seven ties and 18 lead changes, perhaps the signature play of the game came with just under two minutes left in regulation. Trailing 55-53, GBC freshman forward Devonne Richardson began to drive to the basket and was whistled for an offensive foul that sent the Lightning bench and fans in attendance in an uproar. DC went on to score five straight points as part of a 7-0 run that led to a 70-63 Charger lead and that was ultimately the Lightning's undoing.
Richardson again led the way for GBC as she recorded her third consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. This game marks her ninth double-double of the season. She also had team-highs of three assists and four steals.
Fellow freshman forward Irene Hudson also provided a big lift off the bench for the second straight game, scoring 13 and pulling down eight boards. Redshirt-sophomore guard Jacinda Jones was the third Lightning scorer in double-figures with 11 points to go with six rebounds.
For Dominican, who's seeding in the tournament was still uncertain after today but needed a win to possibly earn a No. 3 seed, Rachelle Sainten was the catalyst with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Also, Adele Laskowski was close to a triple-double with 10 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.
GBC played well for the most part defensively, allowing DC to shoot just 31 percent from the field on the afternoon while forcing 13 turnovers and blocking five Charger shots. Both teams made just nine field goals in the second half, and GBC actually made one more field goal (21-20) over the course of the game.
But free-throw shooting made the difference as DC made 16-of-23 (70 percent) from the charity stripe and GBC made just 11-of-20 (55 percent). The Chargers also held a 48-44 rebounding advantage, collecting 14 second-chance points off of 19 offensive boards.
