RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Redshirt sophomore guard Jacinda Jones and junior guard Janae Weldon combined for 34 points as the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team cruised to a 63-51 victory at Felician College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Sat. afternoon.
The Lightning improved to 14-10 overall and 10-6 in the conference while Felician fell to 15-9 overall and 9-7 in league play. GBC has now won the last five meetings between these two schools dating back to the 2006-07 season.
Jones and Weldon were the story all afternoon for the Lightning, scoring 18 and 16, respectively and combining for eight of GBC's season-high nine three-point field goals. Jones shot 7-for-9 from the field (4-for-5 from three-point range), grabbed six rebounds and had two steals in 38 minutes of work, while Weldon was 6-for-7 from the field (4-for-4 from behind the arc), with a game-high five assists, two blocks and a steal in 36 minutes of playing time.
As a team, the Lightning outshot FC from the field, 43-percent (23-53) to a mere 30 percent (19-63) and shot 75 percent from three-point range (9-for-12) while holding Felician to zero three-point field goals on 18 attempts. They also held a 41-31 rebounding advantage on the day.
The host Golden Falcons controlled the action early. Jessica Ford (nine points, four rebounds) scored five of FC's first seven points and then got some help from Janelle Biamonte and Quay Baskerville as the Falcons twice led by as many as six, 12-6 and then 14-8. But a 7-0 run by GBC, aided by five consecutive points by Jones, gave the Lightning a 15-14 lead at the 12:16 mark.
Trailing 19-18 with 8:34 left in the half, Jones connected on a jumper in the paint to put GBC ahead to stay, 20-19. The Lightning scored 20 of the final 30 points in the half while making four treys. Freshman forward Akilah Sewell even got in on the three-point parade, connecting on what was her only three-point attempt of the season. GBC led 38-29 at the break and never looked back.
The visiting Lightning continued its three-point onslaught as Weldon and Jones each nailed a trey during a 7-0 run to start the second half that saw GBC extend its lead to 17 (46-29). The Lightning led by as many as 22 at the 11:34 mark, but Felician was able to cut that margin to 12 and give the game its final score of 63-51.
GBC, currently at No. 3 in the CACC South Division standings, will go on the road for a battle with No. 2 Philadelphia University on Tues., Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. The Lightning will try to avenge a bitter 71-69 loss at home back on Dec. 8.
