PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team outscored Nyack 40-29 in the second half, but could not overcome an abysmal shooting performance in the first half that saw the Lightning score nine points on 2-for-30 shooting from the field and lost a 60-49 verdict to the Warriors on Sat. afternoon in the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Lightning managed just two field goals in the first half, both of which were scored by Jones, who scored five of the Lightning's nine first-half points. It was the lowest scoring output in a 20-minute half by a Lightning team ever (going back as far as the 2000-01 season).
Jones actually made the Lightning's first shot attempt of the half, a three-pointer to give GBC a 3-0 advantage a little over a minute into the game. But it was all Nyack from there, as the Warriors seized the game by outscoring GBC 31-6 the rest of the half. First the Warriors marched to an 18-0 run that saw the Lightning go scoreless for 10:26 and fall behind 18-3. Two free-throws apiece by Richardson and freshman forward Akilah Sewell stopped the bleeding momentarily and closed the gap to 18-7 at the 7:44 mark, but Nyack closed out the half on a 13-2 run and took a 31-9 lead into intermission.
The Lightning came out looking to redeem themselves in the second half, and Jones again got them off to a good start, scoring the first five points of the frame to cut into the large Nyack lead, 31-14. In a matter of minutes, however, the Warriors had their biggest lead of the afternoon (27), 43-16 after a three-pointer by Jasmine Minter (14 points, five rebounds, four assists).
From that point on, the Lightning really took control of the game. Unfortunately, because they had dug themselves such a hole, even scoring 26 of the next 36 points only got them as close as 11 (53-42) at the 4:44 mark. Nyack's Victoria Sweet (10 points, 12 rebounds) delivered a three-point dagger to give the Warriors a 14-point cushion, and Nyack coasted from there.
Rosario scored all 13 of her points in the second half and Richardson scored eight of her 10 in the last frame. After making a shade under seven percent of their field-goals in the first half, the Lightning shot 43.2 percent (16-for-37) from the field in the second half. Their defense began to create their offense in the second half as they forced 14 Warrior turnovers and turned them into 16 points.
GBC will look to build on their performance in the second half of this game as the Lightning visit CACC North Division foe, Felician College on Sat., Feb. 20.
