PIKE CREEK, Del. – Sophomore forward Devonne Richardson had a season-high 15 points to go with 14 rebounds, but the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team shot just 22.6 percent from the field and committed 24 turnovers en-route to a lopsided 73-42 loss to Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Thurs. afternoon at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Lightning (5-6) fell to 1-3 against the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with the loss while IUP evened its overall record at 4-4 and took a 1-0 advantage in the series.
The Crimson Hawks opened the action on an 11-0 run, capped by two consecutive three-point field goals by Vianca Tejada (11 points, seven rebounds), and they never trailed throughout the entire game.
Five straight points by the Lightning's leading scorer, Devonne Richardson helped GBC cut the lead to 13-7 at the 12:50 mark, but a 10-0 IUP run helped the Hawks to a commanding 23-7 lead.
The Lightning closed within nine with a 9-2 run over the next 4:04 to make it 25-16, and they would go into halftime down 31-22.
IUP opened the second half with a 6-0 run to open up a 15-point lead (37-22) nearing the 16-minute mark, but GBC responded with a 5-0 run to cut it back to 10. Senior guard Janae Weldon's only three-ball of the game off an assist from Richardson made it 37-27 with 14:52 to play, but that would be as close as the Lightning would get the rest of the way.
A 13-2 Hawk surge over the next 4:32 put the game out of reach with IUP ahead, 50-29 with 10:20 left in regulation. The lead swelled too as much as 33, and ended with a final score of 73-42 in favor of the visiting IUP Hawks.
The Hawks turned 24 Lightning miscues into 24 points, outscored GBC in the paint 28-16 and were helped by 24 bench points to Goldey-Beacom's 14.
The Lightning were plagued by poor shooting all day long as they finished 14-of-62 from the field (22.6 percent), 4-of-20 from three-point range (20 percent) and 10-of-22 at the free-throw line (45.5 percent). Meanwhile, IUP shot 28-of-63 (44.4 percent) from the field, 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from three-point range and 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the stripe.
The Hawks also had a much better assist-to-turnover ratio as they distributed 18 assists to 15 turnovers while GBC had just eight assists and 24 turnovers. GBC did however win the rebounding battle by slim 46-43 margin. The Lightning collected 22 offensive boards on the day.
GBC will look to bounce back when the Lightning re-enter Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play hosting the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Joseph West Jones Center.
