PHILADELPHIA – On a cold, windy day in Philadelphia, the Goldey-Beacom College men's cross country team shined at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships at Belmont Plateau.
The Lightning, aggressively seeking improvement on last season's ninth-place finish, were led by freshman Stewart Reich (17th place) and junior Ben Kinley (18th place) as they finished seventh with a team score of 144.
GBC was a mere two points behind No. 6 Holy Family (142) and 28 points ahead of No. 8 Bloomfield (172). Felician (31) took first place, followed by Philadelphia U. (63), Wilmington (110), USciences (111) and Nyack (127). Chestnut Hill (213) and Concordia (295) were 9th and 10th place, respectively.
Reich, who was the fastest freshman in the race, finished the 5-mile race in 29:47 while Kinley, who finished 13 spots better than he did last year, was right behind at 30:12.
The two runners showed true teamwork during the difficult middle miles of the race,” head coach Brian Conley said. “Ben motivated Stewart, to pick up the pace during the harder hills around mile three.”
Conley was also very pleased with the Lightning's third runner, Hugo Morales, who ran a 30:40 to finish 25th overall and the third-fastest freshman at the meet.
“He ran a great race against the other very talented runners of the CACC,” Conley said. “He was on an island with foes from other teams and out of contact from the other GBC runners.”
Junior Paul Graybeal was fourth for the Lightning, coming in at 32:06 to finish 36th overall. He improved three spots from last season.
Senior Trevor Freburger came through as the team's fifth man on the day, running a 33:41 to place 49th. He was followed by sophomore David Zartler (50th, 33:54) and freshman Jabari Chambers (58th, 35:25).
