WATERBURY, Conn. – Sabrina Sinopoli's goal in double overtime negated the Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team's comeback as Post University defeated the Lightning, 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Sat. afternoon.
Sophomore forward Kelly Williams scored two goals to lead GBC (1-11-1, 1-9-1 CACC) back from a 2-0 deficit only to have Sinopoli score her second goal of the day in the second overtime session to send the Lightning to defeat. With the two goals, Williams now has a team-high five goals for the season.
Sinopoli, who had a foot in all three Eagle goals today, assisted on the first goal of the day scored by Rachel Shivers just before the 25-minute mark. She added the second Post goal of the day herself nearly 10 minutes later on a free kick to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
Momentum would shift just before the half though as Williams took a pass from junior midfielder Karin Eriksson and sent a shot past Post goalkeeper Elizabeth Johnson for a goal just minutes before the break. The assist was Eriksson's first of the season, and she is now tied for second on the team with five points (2g, 1a).
The momentum shift would carry into the second half as the Lightning stayed on the attack and Williams put in her own rebound for an unassisted goal in the 57th minute to knot the score at two apiece.
After Williams goal, neither team could seem to generate any offense as the two teams combined for just three shots in the entire second half. The score remained tied 2-2 at the end of regulation.
Post outshot GBC 4-0 in the two overtime sessions before Sinopoli scored the gamewinner in the second session.
Junior goalkeeper Kristin Degenhardt played the full game in the Lightning net, allowing three goals and making five stops for the day in the loss. Post's Johnson earned the win with a complete game effort, allowing two goals and making three saves.
This game marked the second one-goal loss of the season for GBC, and the second double-overtime game as well. The Lightning are 0-1-1 in overtime games this season.
GBC is right back on the field tomorrow as the Lightning host CACC foe Felician College at 1 p.m. at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.
