MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team went into Pucillo Gymnasium and gave the undefeated Millersville Marauders (7-0) a scare, but the visiting Lightning (1-7) could not pull off the upset as they dropped their fourth straight game, 57-45.
Redshirt-sophomore guard Jacinda Jones led the Lightning with 17 points and junior guard Janae Weldon pitched in 15 points and three assists.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as the two teams managed just four points apiece over the first 10 minutes of action. The Lightning, who turned the ball over a season-high 31 times on Sat. against Chestnut Hill, had 15 turnovers in the first half (30 for the game).
Neither team really got in any kind of offensive rhythm until the six-minute mark as Millersville tried to pull away on a few different occasions, but Weldon and Jones would not let it happen. The two combined for 21 of the Lightning's 23 first-half points to keep their team in the game as the Lightning went into the intermission down just four, 27-23.
The Lightning came out determined to snap their three-game losing skid in the second half, beginning the second frame on a 10-2 run to take a 33-29 lead at the 15:22 mark. Freshmen forwards Akilah Sewell and Irene Hudson each pitched in four points during the run.
But GBC could not extend its lead beyond four, and Millersville's Dominique Stroman's conventional three-point play gave the Marauders back the lead at 12:48. That started a 10-0 Millersville run over the next four minutes that gave Millersville a 45-37 advantage at 8:35. Jones hit two free-throws to cut the lead to six (45-39), but that would be the closest GBC would get.
Millersville came into the game averaging a 20.7 point margin of victory through six games this year, but GBC hung right with the Marauders until the final whistle and lost by just 12.
