PHILADELPHIA – Junior guard Janae Weldon led all scorers with 15 points and freshman forward Irene Hudson poured in 12, but the Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team could not overcome 28.8 percent shooting from the field as the Lightning dropped their second straight game on Thurs. night, 79-52 against Holy Family at the Campus Center.
With the loss, GBC falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Holy Family improved to 5-1 (2-0 CACC).
Holy Family, the favorite to win the CACC South Division this season, jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead in the first three minutes of play, and never looked back. The Tigers shot 43.2 percent from the field to the Lightning's 28.0 percent in the first half.
GBC could not find its offense as the Lightning managed just eight points through the first 15 minutes of play and found themselves down, 32-8. Weldon found her stroke late in the half, scoring nine of her 15 before the break, including two three-point field goals, but HFU took a commanding 44-23 lead into the intermission. The Lightning, which came into the game leading the conference in offensive and defensive rebounds and rebounding margin, was out-rebounded 30-13 in that first half, and 64-35 for the game.
The Tigers did not let up after the break, going on a 16-6 run midway through the second half to extend their lead to a game-high 31.
Freshman forward Devonne Richardson nearly had a double-double for the Lightning with nine points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Arielle Alford saw 13 minutes of playing time tonight as she continues to work her way back into playing shape after an off-season injury. She scored her first points of the season during the second half, making 2-of-2 at the foul line and 1-of-3 from the field. She also pitched in one rebound, one steal and one block.
